5.29 but maybe I should just do 4.88

Don't blame you. I was crossing the Coq (BC Hwy 5) with stock gears.
Alaska, that will be cheaper than I paid here.
FYI, prepare for a 2 day down time for your truck.

Also, you may want to seriously consider getting a front locker while it is being done. Kinda wished I had now.

So which did you decide? 4.88 or 5.29 and what were the convincing factors?

Well what convinced me was rlj251 and the drive from Dawson. I know the area well being a tuque wearer myself, I am formilar with the area of the drive that was done. Also my drive from YYC to ANC. There was times I was in 3rd going up a small grade. I will be going with the 5.29.

First I need to fix my taco from the bird attack. One light 900 bumper 300 unpainted. Dam bird!

I’m going to revive this thread for a fresh set of opinions lol.

I have a mostly stock SR5 now. It has 32” E rated KO2s, a diamondback, and a modest amount of tools and other things being hauled around on a regular basis. I’m also on Icon leafs and shocks in the back. Bilstein 5100s in the front.

I am setting up an upgrade plan for the next 2 years.

    Weight considerations:
I plan to add a CBI front bumper, cbi rear (probably no swing outs), skid plates, sliders, winch, rack, and a tent(only on when camping). I’ll also be hauling some water and extra fuel.

    Tire size:
I might go with 35s in a few years but that is way in the future. I will probably be on 33s or less for at least the next 5 years. I will stick with the 32s for at least the next 2.

This truck will continue to be my daily driver as well while it is on 33s. I plan to retire it to “fun only” in around 5 years and pick up a commuter. I am trying to decide between 5.29s and 4.88s. I’m going to get front and rear air lockers installed as well... opinions?

5.29. don’t even waste your time with 4.88 unless you plan to stay on stock tires.

I understand this is a debate between 4.88 and 5.29's. But I did not see any mention of considering a higher gear like 4.30 or 4.56 and going to an Atlas 2 speed transfer case with a lower low like the 3.8 or a lower low. Yes more $ but maintaining better or lower RPM's at highway speed and still lowering that crawl ratio.

You dont really maintain better rpm at highway speed because your truck just cant run that low. People are having trouble staying in 5th and 6th. The intent is to regear to make the truck driveable with larger tires and weight from a DD perspective. You dont really need an atlas or Tacobox unless you are MT, only because the crawl ratio makes it difficult to manage a clutch when crawling. Unless youre willing to SAS add 40s etc, you arent going to be running any trails that really need an Atlas or Tacobox

5.29s for sure. Based on your plans for the future, you'll need them. They'll work great with the setup you have now, too.

Ok this is making me feel better. Some people over on overland bound were concerned with me overgearing when I was asking for recommendations on nearby shops to do the work. Granted they were not 3rd gen Tacoma owners so I don’t think they know the extent of the.... “character” that our stock gearing has lol.

Typical, we have double overdrives, they don't understand that.

Reading through this thread makes me realize some of you guys need to slow the hell down. Why do you need to go faster than 85mph on the highway, ever?? You must have some good luck with cops. I've gotten enough speeding tickets in my day to put me in my place and stay the speed limit, or 5 over tops.

Also, if you live anywhere near mountains or high elevation, 5.29's is a must, even with stock tires.

I’m sure this has been beat up but with no armor, 285 E’s, 5.29s, and OVT 2019 Beta 91 I’m averaging 14.0 around San Diego according to my dash but 15 on my Fusion OBD reader. Anyone else averaging under 15 or even under 14? Also why the discrepancy between my OBD and the dash, which is accurate?

    For 33's and above 5.29's
For all else including stock 4.88's

Nitro gears should be sending Toyota execs hookers and cocaine to thank them for the stock gears they put in the truck.

Freeway speed limit where I'm at is 80, highway is 70. On the freeway I'm usually cruising between 80 and 85 and may go up to 90 to pass. I'm considering whether or not to re-gear eventually and the thought that I'd be maxed out at 86 and pulling very high RPM at 80 with 5.29s is definitely a concern.

I dunno, just seems like a really high speed for a truck in general. I think if I were driving that speed on the regular, I'd get a car.

I don't deny that 80 or 85 is fast. Freeway driving isn't my primary travel, but probably half a dozen times per year I'm driving at least 500 miles over the course of a day or two via freeway. The six trips aren't enough to justify having a separate car, but I still need a truck to be able to do truck things, hence the quandary. :)

Meh , we drive up through ID, MT and WY and to be honest there really isn't a need to drive that fast. Outside Colorado the traffic is sparse.

On our trips, I just set cruise control at 65-70 regardless of the speed limit which is the speed limit for heavy trucks anyway. Your mpg is going to tank hard over 65mph regardless of gears so not sure what is gained.
