odometer reprogramming

I recently did the LED swap/mod on my gauge cluster. It came out fantastic. However, I used a gauge cluster from a wrecked Tacoma. To my chagrin, the odometer displays the mileage on the wrecked truck, not mine.

After a little digging, I learned that the odometer data is stored on an EEPROM w/in the cluster gauge circuit board. I assumed (incorrectly) that is was stored on the truck's ECU but it is not.

Does anyone know of any resources on where I can get my digital odometer reprogrammed?

 

If it’s in the eeprom then it can be changed by the dealership but....

you need to install your old gauge and take them the new gauge. The old one needs to be installed so they can read it. They need to certify the true mileage before Installing and resetting the replacement gauge to your trucks true mileage. It is a crime for anyone else Other than a certified business to reset an odometer.

Here is some reading for you. I don't know if it is applicable or not, but it should be the same. There is a reason they make it a pain in the ass. The old style dial odometers were simple and easy to change. Don't ask me how I know this.

Thank you guys for your replies, especially Jimmyh. I have reviewed those link before but I appreciate you taking the time to post them for me.

I believe that I've located the EEPROM on the odometer circuit board. I'm going to attempt to de-solder it and swap it with the EEPROM from the original board. If anyone is interested, I'll post a picture and let you know if I was successful or not. Please let me know if you are interested.

The odometer actually has to be sent out to a company that verifies and certifies the correct mileage and it makes the changes, the dealer can not do it. In most states it’s illegal for you to tamper with the odometer in any way.

 

Please document with pictures! I would love to see it and a successful outcome.

(2)the owner of the vehicle or agent of the owner shall attach a written notice to the left door frame of the vehicle specifying the mileage before the service, repair, or replacement and the date of the service, repair, or replacement.
(b) Removing or Altering Notice.—A person may not, with intent to defraud, remove or alter a notice attached to a motor vehicle as required by this section.

(3)A person acquiring a motor vehicle for resale may not accept a written disclosure under this section unless it is complete.
(4)(A)This subsection shall apply to all transfers of motor vehicles (unless otherwise exempted by the Secretary by regulation), except in the case of transfers of new motor vehicles from a vehicle manufacturer jointly to a dealer and a person engaged in the business of renting or leasing vehicles for a period of 30 days or less.
(B) For purposes of subparagraph (A), the term “new motor vehicle” means any motor vehicle driven with no more than the limited use necessary in moving, transporting, or road testing such vehicle prior to delivery from the vehicle manufacturer to a dealer, but in no event shall the odometer reading of such vehicle exceed 300 miles.

Update: Success!

Swapping the EEPROM from one board to another is tricky, even if you are experienced in soldering. Having access to a microscope was a big help for me too. In the future, I'm going to get a few tunnel soldering tips like this

The EEPROM is an 8-pin IC (integrated circuit) whose pins are coated in some sort of blue colored coating. I'm still not sure what the blue stuff is; it dissolved in isopropyl alcohol and some gentle brushing w/ an acid brush. It's not a conformal coating (otherwise it wouldn't have just dissolved like that). I think that it's to indicate tampering/removal of various board components pertinent to mileage information. The same blue coating is also on the pins of the microcontroller and a relay array IC that are also on the circuit board.

I swapped out the new EEPROM with the old and viola, my new cluster gauge displays the correct mileage reading! I don't remember the EEPROM part number off the top of my head but I have it written down somewhere. I'll update this post w/ that information when I can find it.

* keep in mind that tunnel type soldering tips should be purchased based upon the footprint size of the IC (not the number of pins). I do not know the SOIC of the EEPROM in question.

 

I forgot to mention, for those contemplating doing this too: remember to note the orientation of the EEPROM. This is critical so that the correct pins are on the correct pads when you re-solder the IC onto the board.
