Nah, cutthroats are native to the Pacific coast and Rocky Mountains only.

Aren’t there a couple of different strains of cutthroats, east slope- west slope? I know they the native species, rainbows are the invasive species.

The "colorado" cutthroat is the greenback. It's numbers are low and catching one is a good thing to take care and celebrate.

What about the Colorado River cutts or Rio Grande? And I've read a little about the rediscovery of the San Juan cutts.

I fish a little creek on the east side of the continental divide where I catch what I think are greenbacks, but more likely some hybridized thing the division stocked decades ago.

I believe the western front has some different cutty. On the Eastern slope I always hear about greenbacks and where they are. May be just those Ive encountered and their particular interests. Youre the native though I'm just a dirty bass fisherman out of his element at the core

I too am a former dirty bass fisherman, but I'd have to wager its a greenback given that its on the front range. They have been stocked all over the place. It may not be genetically "pure" but neither are we. I'm in grad school studying the greenback right now....loads of interesting history if you are a dork like me.

Technically that was caught in North Platte drainage, and I'm not sure greenbacks were native there, but Colorado River cutts certainly weren't either.

I just like catching cutts no matter what they are or if I can tell the difference. That one I posted on the last page was caught in WY on the west side of the divide, so it should be a snake river, but to me it looks more like a yellowstone. Who knows. :notsure:

Floated again today. As soon as we pushed off the bank, my buddy’s anchor on his kayak dragged across my boat - and straight across my fly rod. I said “damn dude, you almost broke my rod!”
Then we got situated and I got my rod out to use it and the tip just fell over...

Here is an interesting article: https://www.heraldandnews.com/outdo...cle_212035f5-3167-50f8-bb60-d8736c9ecdd3.html

More importantly they are claiming a sub-species, Bear River Cutthroats. The fish on the article looks fairly identical to what was pictured above. Here is a map that includes the historic range of the Greenbacks and it looks to cover the North Platte Drainage Basin as well. I can't really tell though because I do not have the sources actual shapefile.
Edit (The range actually does not appear to be in the North Platte drainage)

It was a very quick “dude I’ll buy you a new one!!!” He text me today about it, too. So we’re all good. Ended up with the spinning rod most of the day. It didn’t break much off, but the rod just didn’t cast nearly as well and the line kept wrapping around the part of the rod above the last guide so it was annoying.

That little area not shaded between the greenback and co river cut range is Walden CO, aka North Park. I don’t believe the green were native there. I caught all kind of browns and rainbows while living and working there. Had to head over the divide to get greens in the park.
