About 6000 miles ago, I had a local shop change my oil. Decided to learn how to change my oil myself and when I went to drain my old oil about 13 qts drained out. I was wondering how bad this is, and what specifically I can ask this shop to check to see if my engine has been damaged since they offered to do a diagnostic for me.

To add on to this, when I had left the shop after they "changed" my oil I noticed that my transmission was acting really weird so I had returned that day and they said that my tranny had lost fluid and they filled it back up. What seems to have happened was that their tech drained the transmission and not the oil. Does it seem fair to ask for a refund on the oil change and what they charged me for the transmission fluid?

Too bad you waited so long. They should repair your transmission and your engine too. Driving that long with 13 quarts of oil is bad on the engine and seals. I also highly doubt they put back enough transmission oil and ran a temp check on the transmission

it’d be hard to prove anything this old now

    no bueno

They screwed up. This is a classic the shop drained my tranny oil and filled my engine oil double the capacity thread.

You might want to take some pictures or something and bring it up to the shops attention. At this point it is fair to ask for a full refund and then potentially some.

13 quarts of oil in your engine? Why do I feel like that would have made a mess?

They potentially just ruined the engine and tranny. I would be pretty damn pissed

That's not unheard of, I see this kind of screw up on a regular basis at work. The common car to happen is Audi A3, but has happened at least once to a Tundra; this one I couldn't understand, drain plug for engine is like 3-4 feet away from that for transmission. I have said a few times to techs, "Remind me not to let you work on any of my cars".

You drove 8 months with 13qts of oil in your engine and it never once starting smoking like a chimney? Impressive.

Do you know if a shop can check if seals are bad @BillsSR5? or is it something that will show itself down the line?

I would get up under your truck with a flash light and see if the oil pan and valve cover seals are weeping oil or look wet, if your under warranty they can have a case on file if the truck starts to really leak oil later on[IMG]
