I recently bought a 3 inch lift and am looking at how to best fit trail grappler 285/70r17’s without rubbing because I hear that they would.

Do a search. This has been talked about and talked about so many times on so many threads. You should easily be able to find your answer with much detail and feedback from lots of folks.

Best place to search is the suspension thread.

I see so many people wanting 33 inch tires. Is there a specific reason? 3 inch lift, chopping a cab mount and replacing your UCA's seems like a lot of work for a few inch bigger tire. Is this mostly for clearance so you can clear rocks and stumps? I'm just curious.

Looks for sure are a part of it as well.

OP, if you don't compress the suspension by going offroad and in ruts, etc, you may not rub daily driving.

Unfortunately it varies somewhat depending on wheel backspace, tire manufacturer, vehicle etc. But You will very highly likely rub off road.

Not talking shit, but some of us bought our trucks to get us to places that most trucks cant go. 31s on a truck as long as these will find its limitations very quickly.

There’s anecdotal evidence suggesting a lift of 3 inches won’t rub DD. I have no idea. I would just get the CMC. but there’s always stories of no rubbing (even off roading) and it turns into a dumpster fire.

People on TW like to spit all kinds of bs. A lift doesnt really do anything for clearing bigger tires unless you limit the up travel like crazy (eliminating a huge chunk of the lifts potential) with a big ole bump stop. The only thing I will say, is that if he is going 33s, hes going to end up doing the cmc so may as well go ahead and do it. My 2 cents.

No way around a CMC. Wheel offset will help a little, but will still rub at full lock.

Hey man, just search around. You definitely don’t have to have a cab mount chop to fit 33s. I don’t know why people get so bent about this subject.

I have 285/70/17 KO2s which are 32.8” tires and I don’t have a CMC. The only thing I did was remove the front chin spoiler. I also trimmed about 3mm of plastic with a dremel on the front of the fender well. You can’t even tell it’s trimmed.
You don’t need a 3” lift to fit 33s. I did this with only a 2” lift. I now have a 2.5” lift because I changed to coilovers.

The way to get around a CMC is to install some adjustable upper control arms like SPC and adjust the caster alignment to bring the front tires as far forward as possible. This will also improve the steering and tracking after you lift the front.

My tires never get closer than about 3/4” from the cab mount after the SPCs were installed and caster was adjusted. I have done some decent off-roading and have never rubbed so far.

I average 21 MPG during my commutes of 20 miles each way. If I get on the interstate and speed around 65-70, It comes down to about 19 MPG.

I also don’t notice any loss of power and/or performance.

Also the larger the tire, the flatter the bumps. Try rolling a floor jack over a zip tie. It may not seem like much but every inch matters when doing high speeds on logging roads.

I had 33s on my F-150 and went to 35s, going to to 31s on my Tacoma and I am finding all sorts of new bumps in the road. 33s are on order for the Tacoma. I think 35s on a Tacoma are a great idea, just it's a little much for me until I plan to regear.
