Nitro Gear recommends the 4.88 for:
    -Stock tire -33" tires
-33" tire while leaving truck stock (no additional weight like steel bumpers, etc.)

    5.29 for:
    -34-35+ inch tires
-33+ inch tires with 400+ lbs of additional weight to the truck.

If you're sticking to stock tires but adding some additional weight such as steel bumpers, I'd say stick to 4.88.

This is also another source of where to buy gears. You can buy Nitro Gears directly from them, or from ECGS. Ecgs offers additional services though.

    First page has been updated.
So, due to demand we have added an option to it for new customers.
So, for current flash kit owners there is:
    1. flash kit (you already own)
    2. vF Tuner (optional)
    3. Tune packs (provided with your purchase of vF tuner)

This includes our tunes (current on flash manager) + vF tuner option which lets you tune if you wish, and tune packs (free since you already bought the tunes) which allow you to make a tune for yourself from one of our tunes.

For new customers there will be:
    1. vF Tuner - This is the basic flashing, editing and logging software. This allows you to make your own calibration if you wish to. Some example files are provided.
    2. Tune packs - optional tune package upgrade that can be purchased that will give you our tunes (like 2.0)

Hopefully this answers some questions about getting tunes with vF tuner. I understand a LOT of you guys just want the tunes, so we have made that option.

It is still important to understand that after 2.0 is released, we will only be working on software features, not new tunes.

How difficult is this software to use? I'm just so leary about fiddling around with something that can destroy the vehicle...

I'm moving up to Idaho, I'd kinda figured I'd just make a trip up to their place someday. I can't re-gear anytime soon due to lack of monies.... I appreciate the info though.

My gear installer recommends 5.29 for all 3rd gen as does Nitro. See the Nitro video on YouTube.

I always thought the AT trucks were 5.29 no matter what but the MT trucks were better with 4.88......I cant promise myself i wont go larger than a 33 inch tire, so perhaps i should rethink the 4.88 idea....hmmm

Dude. Asking constantly isn’t gonna make it come faster. Calm down

test tunes typically get released for 04b04 and 04b13. After testing has completed and there are no outstanding issues they are released for other ecus.

time frames are not given because people lose their shit if it’s even a second late or they change due to issues or new features.

I see you’ve been here a week. Welcome to tw. Don’t be the new guy that ends up on everyone’s shit list by being obnoxious.

5.29. There is no reason to spend the money and not do 5.29. Especially with OVtune being able to “tune” shift points. 5.29s will guarantee you’ll be good to go and won’t have to limit yourself on tires, or weight.

I can say that honestly 5.29s on STOCK tune was VERY drivable. Immediately drove better especially on the highway. MPG went up and no more gear hunting. Stock tune, with 35s. Now throw OVtune on top of it and you can actually forget about all of it. Haha 5.29s are the absolute best investment you can make for these trucks.

It would suck to spend all that money to regear and then always think you should have went 5.29.

About the only reason for 4.88s in an auto is if you are staying stock size tires forever. Otherwise you need 5.29s.

you are better off being overgeared, especially with the powerband of the 3.5 and weight many people add.

    Matt -

First Page updates are very informative. With the addition of the optional Tune Packages for purchase, I think you have found a way to provide us with the best of all worlds. Thanks so much for all your efforts. My truck is about all I could ask for at this point with the 2.0 tune. I've been running it for quite a while now (04B13 - MT) and have no complaints.

I just noticed the cold start stutter also. Is this something we should be concerned with? I mean, is it safe to keep using the tune with that happening?

The startup in this video sounds like my truck starting. Don’t hear anything that would strike me as ‘off’. Maybe I’m just used to it. Tks

If I were to regear, it would probably be 4.88 because my Tacoma is my daily driver and I have no need for larger tires.
