I bought a used zero turn mower last week with a vacuum system and been going over it and this chute piece was worn and had a hole in it. Decided to break out the cardboard and fire up the plasma cutter and fix it. Should last me a long time. Welding it and not catching it on fire was fun. It wouldn't fit in if I welded it outside.

I was excited I thought you were going to break out the plastic welding kit and weld a piece over the hole.

Not really much different then tig welding a heat source and the correct filler rod.

Bumper is just about done. Just need to cap one of the end tube (minor oversight) and then hit it with a da sander to get it nice and smooth and millscale free.

Anyone know if there are any big differences in how tough these steel plates would be? I would be making skid plates out of them for my truck. I have a front skid so ideally I would make a trans, transfer case, and gas tank skid with the craigslist plate if it seems like an ok buy
    Craigslist $50 47”x67” 3/16 plate

Prices at the metal supplier that I use-seems really expensive to me:E9419191-EC2B-4989-83F6-D2A3DE73A185.jpg

It will be pretty stout made out of 3/16". That is what I used. To beef up the structure, I doubled up the vertical ends/edges of the skid. I have since, dropped my truck on it and it held it's original shape.

Why such odd sizes unless they are drops from big orders .

Then for sizes like that you most likely pay a cutting/service charge

The Craig`s List someone cut it to the wrong size.

As for making skid plates it would depend how far the truck falls before impacting the sharp pointy rock

A fine line between weight and strength

FWIW I paid $110 for a 36”x48” piece of 3/16”. They’re asking $78 which seems plenty fair. Steel ain’t cheap. That CL ad is super cheap though, so may as well go with that.

I was also confused by the sizes offered at the metal supplier but oh well. I guess my question was more of if there are any differences in the type of steel that could make the A36 significantly stronger than the mystery steel on CL.

If it’s not a full sheet they are almost certainly drops from other orders that were filled. I go to my local steel yard and almost exclusively buy drop stock $/lb. Thin gauge as cheap as 0.65/lb

This was the other option I was thinking but I would have to look around at different steelyards most likely because the one I usually go to didn't have anything larger than 18x18 last time I was there.

That and it would be hard to beat $50 for that 168lb piece of 3/16

It’s crazy how much variation there is in steel prices.

The place I go to is $120 for a 4’x8’ sheet of 3/16” and a buddy of mine pays $180 for the same sheet at a place 2 hours north.

Thinking of putting a bottle opener there. 1x3”. 1/8” itch. Anyone have suggestions of a bottle opener that would fit there? I googled but didn’t find anything. Also, making a tiny pilot hole then self tapping screws work?
