When To Sell?

A lot of the issue is the fact that the trucks have become so expensive. People want to believe there's a lot of value left over, and they are interested in maximizing that. For instance, if the minute you left the lot it was worth $5,000, not many people would be interested.

 

Last taco I traded in I got 29.5 large, it was 34 new. 11.2 cents per mile. If I had sold the same truck at 250,000 miles I would have gotten roughly 11 cents per mile. The difference becomes a lot larger if I don't ignore the cost of tax, title, and interest that racks up with every trade.

Long term ownership wins by a nose, as I opined earlier.

 

Boggles the mind.

 

Drive it until the wheels fall off and the frame rots out... then make it your trash rig.

 

How does that make sense? It makes sense to keep it til the wheels fall off. Or just lease the damn thing.

 

My nephew has been a new car salesman for years. I asked him and he said 36-39 months. I cannot substantiate this.

 

Read an article once that the sweet spot was to buy a vehicle that was two years old, hold onto it for three and sell it. I assume part of that was when refreshes come out it often hurts your ability to sell. Also, if you're buying a two year old vehicle its fairly new, but the previous owner has taken the hit for a lot of the initial depreciation instead of you.

Definitely best to keep them til the wheels fall off (or more accurately til the expense of fixing isn't worth it). Having a vehicle paid off is great. My Taco was purchased new, paid off about 4 years ago. That's 4 years of ZERO CAR PAYMENTS. I have not had to do any work to it besides fun mods and oil changes. I have since used those funds to buy a SxS using the same monthly payment amount. It's now been paid off a year, too!

 

I’m always amazed the number of people that love.car payments. Let’s Say average payment is 600 (36k financed 5 yrs 0 interest)month. Always buys a car every 5 years. Over 20 years that’s 144k Keep the same same car 20 years(paid for after 5)and your up +\- 100k. Minus another 40k cause you buy a new one cash still up +/- 60k depending on what you buy.

 

I must feel very different about Toyota pickups than some of you. Like an old opinel, a Gibson SG, a Pendleton... I bought these material things knowing I would enjoy them greatly, and for a very long time, as opposed to the materialistic way of dumping something for the next “thing”. Selling the ‘17 isn’t even in the remote future, and I’ll likely never be able to part with my 01. I mean it’s a Toyota. Keeping it for a long ass time...that was the whole POINT of getting a Toyota.

 

I'm not super materialistic, but I will say that my grandad left me 15 of his Pendleton shirts. Those are 100% my winter wardrobe, fuckers will last two lifetimes now.

 

People’s needs change, I couldn’t have predicted 2 1/2 years ago my son would become a giant and he won’t fit in the backseat. We end up taking the sedan everywhere now and the truck is my commuter to work but a really nice commuter

 

Buy once, cry once, and enjoy a lifetime of quality. Minimalists agree that this is the opposite of materialistic. And I also agree with that.

 

After 9.5 years I sold mine for 60% of what I paid new including tax paid. Nice

I sold my quad last year... Used the purchase to build credit to purchase my first new vehicle (my Taco). I'm still sad about it. I just knew it was a ticking time bomb as I had never done any work to it. Always ran PERFECT. Still had the original battery in it that was 12 years old. Since I had the SxS only used it about once or twice a year. Rather than let it rot into the shop floor I sold it off. The memories are fond...

 

That’s a Tacoma for you. I was just shy of 4 years on my Macan and got about 64% with 35k miles and was smiling all the way home. Granted, it might have had something to do with the new wheels. But the taco smokes most vehicles with residual value.

 

When I wanted to get a new 2020 I looked at what the dealership was offering for my 2010 and I said hell no. I will just do private sale and get more and selling private I got an extra 3500 so the new buyer brought me a fat stack of cash then we go to the title place and the lady said your truck is only worth Xxx and not what your paying cash for but the new buyer new it was well taken care of and was still a good purchase so we were both happy and he even sent me a picture of the family up in the mountains enjoying his new ride

 

Vehicles are too expensive to just toss and turn every few years. Hey, if you have more money then sense, have at it. I’m just a blue-collar guy. I strive to keep vehicles at least 7-8 years and that’s bare minimum.
