Hey Guys - I need a steel bumper mainly for durability on the trails but can't decide if I should get the tire swing arm (or dual swing arms for my two 5Gal scepter cans) and would appreciate feedback from some of you who have them.

I would love the dual swing arms but my biggest hold back & confusion comes from arguments on how 33" tires add too much weight when on rocky trails or in the desert. I think Tacoma Beast has a Utube vid where he mentions this with his truck build as well but I've seen numerous vids/pics of Tacoma's with the tire carriers on trails as well.

If you guys don't mind, please elaborating on your particular experiences in this regards. Do you feel the added weight and is it bad for the frame or any other component in the long run? Has anyone broken anything as a result? I live in So. Cal and my trips are at mountain, desert, beach, Baja terrains once a month or so.

I have Icon's with a 3" lift. I recently started carrying my 33" spare under the bed which fits just snug and to my surprise still haven't scrapped it on the trails. My tow hitch sides are bent like shit though as i'm constantly hitting it on rocks. I'm also definitely upgrading to 35" MT when these thin out so the 35" spare won't fit under the bed. I am trying not to carry the tire on the bed as it takes quite a bit of space that I use for camping gear, etc. but will go this route if the tire gate has potential issues.

Thank you for taking the time to read/respond thru my confusion.

I have a dual swing HC with either a 35 or 33 mounted.

You have to build your truck from the ground up with supporting components to support the extra weight.

I have never had any issues with the weight or high clearance steel bumper or tire carrier but I have everything around the rear as been built to support it.

Keep in the mind that the bumper is a canti-lever weight which is a bit of a multiplier so compensate accordingly.

I’d be careful with whose advice you buy from YouTube because I honestly haven’t found anyone who knows shit about these trucks on there.

Define “everything around the rear has been built” what do you mean by everything?

So overall rigidity in the frame some of these items include shock tower relocation mounted to the bed with cross support tubing; hammer hangers with cross member, bed gussets, custom tuning of shocks, larger more robust leaf pack, etc

Not saying you HAVE to do this but I'm not risking that with 350+ pounds hanging out at the rear most point while jocking up and down on rocks.

Ya I’m at 600 with the bumper and GFC, add gear and residual weight from sliders and skids. I probably added 800-900 pounds to the rear axle.

Thanks Joe. So sounds like the HC themselves are fine with the added weight and it’s modifying the suspension/frame mounting components/etc. of the truck to accommodate the added weight.
    What bumper do you have?

C4 Fabrication. 99% of companies do not make a dual swing, I think expedition one also makes a dual swing
