Stuck Oil Filter - 2011 4 cylinder, how do I get this thing out?

The oil filter is stuck solid. With it being a 4 cylinder I access the oil filter underneath the passenger side of the truck. I purchased oil filter pliers but am unable to access the filter with them due to its location. I then purchased a oil filter socket wrench attachment. Im able to access the filter with this but when I crank it just slips. Im not sure if its a low quality attachment and thats why its slipping, or if there something I can do to make it grip better. Has anyone experienced this? Ive done some research and seen the screwdriver through the middle method, but it looks like this wont work with where its located on the 4 cylinder.

Ive got some ideas, but would really appreciate any advice, these are the ideas I have. Would some smacks from a rubber mallet help loosen this up? Should I spray a bunch of penetrating oil around the top and hope some seeps in? Is there anything I can do to increase the grip of my socket attachment?

If anyone has any ideas id appreciate whatever thoughts you've got.

 

Take sheet of paper and stick it between the filter and filter socket.
You will probably have to beat it on.
That should help with grip. But if it a plastic type socket, you’ll probably just slip where the extension/ratchet goes in the socket.

Be advised. The socket adapter will likely get get stuck on the filter.
If this doesn’t work, you then have a stuck socket on the filter.
So do this at your own risk.

There may be others with better ideas.

I had that issue with a plastic socket.
It helped, thankfully it had a a bolt head type 3/4” adapter where the ratchet went in.
Because the 3/8” extension just started spinning in the socket.
I now have a metal socket. So far so good.

FWIW, my situation was on a John Deere mower.
So, my idea may not work the same for you.

 

I use a band-type wrench with a short handle on my 2013 4 cyl. Sometimes it'll slip, so I'll put gaffer's tape along the inside edge of the band, and that'll be enough to keep the band in place. Anything tacky will work, even a color photo of a lying foreign diplomat or one of my former girlfriends. You can also try loosening the filter when the engine is stone cold rather than warmed up.

Grab it with channel locks. I've done that once or thrice.

 

Yea, similar to @TnShooter idea, I was going to suggest placing some sandpaper between the filter and wrench.

 

In the past on other vehicles I've stabbed a screwdriver through the filter and turned. Worked well, but definitely tore up the filter

 

Had to do this two changes ago. Was definitely a pain and a bit messy but it worked right away.

 

I have used a piece of rubber tool box shelf liner between band type filter wrench and filter for a positive grip.
I also have a strap wrench with the strap an old section of a drive belt that does not stretch and that grabs well.

 

When you are on your back looking up at the filter with your left hand turn filter counterclockwise to remove. These angled oil filter pliers work nicely, too

 

I’ve done both of these in a pinch, preferably channel locks over screwdriver.

Yep. I recommend this all the time and it works great. There is no access to use pliers or the old style strap wrenches on any vehicle I've owned in 20 years.

 

This was my choice when trying to remove a Valvoline Instant Oil Change filter, it must have been put on with an impact wrench. You're right you will be thanked.

 

I've done this before, then failed to get the filter off. The screwdriver just tore laterally through the filter when I applied torque to it. Just a word of caution, but it can definitely work!
