Maybe the Warn 9.5XP? Ramsey has a similar model for about $400 less.

just get a snatch block and know how to use it and any 8000 will be fine, also remember there is no penalty for sitting down for 5 min and really thinking things through. i see a lot of people rush into pulls and not really think them through and they end up pulling themselves from a bad situation into a much worse one.

The pull capacity of the winch is only part of the equation when selecting a winch. You should look at duty cycle. Meaning how long can the winch can be energized pulling and how long is the rest period.
This is the duty cycle for the 9.5xp
    Duty Cycle Rating:
The 9.5XP has one of the best duty cycles.
Check out the duty cycles for warn winches on their web site.
Some winches have less than 1 minute on and a 20 to 30 minute duty cycle before restating the winch.

Warn winch direct sell it for $1069 and free shipping.
I put this on my 2010 4 x 4 Double cab Tacoma TRD attached to an ARB Bumper.
I like this setup. I used it once to removed a 2+ foot high boulder that was blocking my path on a trail. Most off road drivers especially people who expedition travel use their winch 90% of the time to clear objects from the trail and 10% to get unstuck

The Warn VR 8000 winch is an affordable 8k winch - $500 more or less. Would that suffice for my Tacoma for light use a few times a year? Would it also constitute using OME 886 vs 885 coils with an ARB bumper?

Warn VR 8000-s, That's what I've got on my 2012. Never needed it to extract myself, but have pulled some logs and moved the truck for practice (w. 1000 extra lbs). Since I do have a heavy bumper for the winch plus full armor and a camper shell I do need 886 coils, I think w. ARB you might need them as well.
