As some of you may know I'm looking at getting a new Tacoma. I've read (and searched) lots about the frames and undersides rusting fairly quickly. Since I live in the Northeast and NY puts lots of salt on the roads, would undercoating it ASAP help eliminate the rust issues. I don't want to by a new truck just to have it rust like crazy over the course of a few years. My current DD is an 06 Mazda3 that I bought new. I had it undercoated a few days after I got it. The only things that have rusted (surface rust only) are parts that they can't undercoat like LCA and some of the suspension parts.

I don't want to buy a truck that yearly or bi-yearly I need to wire brush, prime and paint.

    Thanks!

You could also paint the frame with quality rust preventative paint. That will make it last.

True, but I don't have the time to do that quickly. I'd want to do something within days of getting the vehicle because the sooner the better.

Not sure what that's supposed to mean... I'm not saying that other vehicles don't rust or have their own issues. I just want to know if there are problems that I need to know about before I drop $30k on a truck. I've read about some issues but want to know if its a minority or the majority.

Sorry for trying to be an informed consumer....

I spray the underside of my vehicles with corrosion block 2-3 times a year. I spray everything but the exhaust. I also spray the engine compartment down too. Been doing this for a while and never have had rust issues. I also take the cowling off my outboard and spray the block and electronics down after each use. The stuff really works well.

Thanks Red. I'll check that stuff out, never heard of it so I'll do a little research.

There is another product called Boeshield T-9. It was developed by Boeing. It claims to leave a thicker film to protect against rust. I have never used it but have been wondering how it compares to corrosion block.

Would you suggest having the dealer do this or take it to an aftermarket place such as Ziebarts?

Hard to believe but there are not many places that rustproof in Vermont anymore :notsure: which I do not get since they salt & use a brine treatment on the roads very liberally.
we do not have any ziebarts only Waxoyl or hot oil treatments by local garages. My dealer didn't even offer it.
My friend used a bar chain/wax blend on mine a couple of summers ago but it really now needs some POR15.
Maybe some others have used either of those you mentioned. If I could do it all over again, it would have been done before delivery & touched up every season.
