The Taco Gods were on my side yesterday. Finally got that bastard pressed out. For anyone needing to do this in the future, you MUST rent the Auto Zone 23 piece set. O'Rielly's set does NOT have the correct size cylinders. The MOOG joint went in straight on the first try. Pretty impressed with the design too. Super stoked to do the left side now

Hey @Rextinkleton93 got a quick shock question for you. Do you know on this type of shock pictured below if the top portion is threaded? Can it be taken off and replaced with type of top where a bolt is used?

    So this type.
    p-23599-fox-2.5-FJ-rear.jpg

    To this type.

    Thanks

I would think so, I know for the eyelet type shock that top cap is just threaded on there. For the stem style shock it should be threaded on, but I haven’t personally chanced that top cap seal on a stem style shock.

I’m almost certain you can though.

the issue is those top caps are the biggest pain in the ass to get off. Most places charge nearly double a normal rebuild to change that seal out because it’s so hard to get off. Need a good vice, a shock body clamp and a special aluminum tool to not scar the anodized finish. Even then, it usually gets dinged up.

I’ve changed probably 10 top caps, and every time I’ve had to heat the threads up to get it to let go, and use a big ass bar for leverage to turn it haha.

edit: not too sure what tool can grab the stem type cap though. That could be tricky.

They have a hex key hole on the top of them, but how much force can you really exert on a 6mm-ish key...

Lol that’s to replace the stem, not the top cap. Those stems just thread out.

No way the hex on top of that shock shaft is 6mm. I bet its 3mm or maybe 4mm. 6 is actually pretty big and could handle some decent force.

    Survey says:

    1/4" or 6.35mm :)

(I just checked my 2.0 shocks out of sheer curiosity)

But to that end if Kyle says he's had to heat them up and use a "big ass" cheater bar, I still think it might end up rounding out or snapping a tool. :bananadead:

ABout 8 0r so years ago I got into that whipped coffee. Lasted a year or so. I still have the wand but rarely use it. I find it funny how it's an "in thing" again.

    Propane will be FTW again!

    That's what she asked!

Looks like it is finally that time. I'm going to swap the engine. It appears the lift will go high enough. I may take off the grill and radiator to make it a little easier/roomier.

If anyone has a couple 17" spare rims they're willing to part with cheap I'd be interested. It will be much easier sitting on rims!
