    What’s up gals/gents,

My new 2020 TRD OR started making this metallic ticking noise when I accelerate from a stop. To the life of me can’t figure it out. I have taken my truck to my $tealership multiple times and they claim they can’t reproduce the sound. Do any of you gals/gents that are mechanically savvy have any ideas what this sound is? You’ll be doing me a gigantic favor because I’m at my wits end. In the video you can hear the ticking noise. PS sorry for the wind.

Is it changing with engine RPM or is it speed related? Could be a ticking valve, or maybe just something loose and flapping in the wind

It definitely changes with RPM. If I let off the gas and coast the sound goes away, as soon as I lightly tap on the gas again the sound is back.

I’m not too familiar with the 3rd gen engines but when I had my 2nd gen the engine emanated a metallic ticking noise that it take as either bring fuel injectors firing and or valves. Both are rpm related. I recently read a post on this forum about the 2020’s having metal particles from casting flaws floating around in the engine. The guy who posted this said the truck threw a CEL. I don’t know if this would be related or not but something you should be aware of anyway with a 2020

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
I know that is a new Taco, but the sound reminds me of wheel bearings, or even u-joints when they start to fail. Given that it goes away when you take the gas off, wheel bearings less likely. Unlikely those with a new truck, but might be worth it to just lift a tire at a time and spin them. Put a stethoscope on the axles. The ticking could also be just about anything under the hood, alternator, water pump, valves, etc. Sorry can't be more precise, but not there so can't check it out!

Does it do it also at very low speed, so as soon as you accelerate, say at 5mph? if so, have a buddy walk/run beside the truck to at least pinpoint the location, left, right, front, back etc.

    Good luck!

The sound is definitely coming from the driver side somewhere under the truck closer to the engine. I had a buddy sit in the back seat and we drove around and would keep pulling over and looking. I’ve been under my truck multiple times tapping stuff thinking it maybe a heat shield but I’m starting to think otherwise.

Yours has made that exact same noise?! If that’s the case then so be it, the truck drives great otherwise. Was just concerned it was something worse because it sounds kind of bad.

Someone put a zip tie on your driveshaft?

I'd check the shield by the gas tank by the carrier bearing assembly. It sounds like a heat shield in the video.

Yeah that’s what it sounds like to me. Apparently the $tealership said my heat shields were all tight and they couldn’t find anything wrong or loose underneath.

I might take it back in and show them this video and see what they say since they couldn’t reproduce the sound

Take a look at your fan shroud. Make sure the fan is not hitting the plastic. It sounds metallic, and like a loose object hitting it. so axles, drive shafts, cooling fans, yadda , yadda and yadda.

I’ve already checked the fan, my friend thought the same thing. Tomorrow I’ll get back underneath and check the drive shaft. Thanks for the advice

So it won’t do it at idle? You don’t want to do this much, because you’ll overheat the transmission - but i’d powerbrake it, to see if you can get it to happen at a stop - that way you can have another person listen for it underhood. set the parkbrake and be careful, of course

That right there sounds like a warranty issue. Take it back, refuse to drive it off until someone looks at it. When the mech looks at it, he will also think somthing is wrong, if he dosnt ask for the supervisor. That is not normal lol

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I plan on taking back and this time I’m not leaving until they figure it out. There’s no reason a brand new truck should be making that noise. I have video evidence now to show them.

went to the Toyota dealer today. Showed the shop foreman the video with the noise. They had my truck for probably 5 hours or so and came back saying that they couldn’t reproduce the noise and opened a case with Toyota. The shop foreman told me it sounded normal to him.

Yeah, it’s kind of irritating because I feel like they know there’s a noise but they don’t know what it is so they’re just telling me it’s normal when obviously it isn’t
