Hey @gut, my truck is the first manual vehicle I've owned and only had a handful of experience driving stick prior to buying it.

The truck is relatively easy to learn on and pretty forgiving for a newcomer, in my opinion. I bought an OR so I don't have the hill start assist, but starting off on steep inclines is an art form that you'll get the hang of eventually that even after 2.5 years I haven't mastered. Two things that I intend to do in the future are the OVTune and accumulator delete when I get a little more consistent with my footwork.

Who knows, you could master it within a month. Or you could roast the clutch on your first try, but that's why they're replaceable!

If I can find an excuse to change gears I do it. It’s the little things.

I‘ve not installed the adm, so i can’t comment on that. I actually would not recommend the ovtune as you’re learning, because the stock tune is much more forgiving on launch.

I know on BMWs their accumulators were designed to slow clutch operation for beginners, so keep that in mind as well

I think accumulators might be a good idea for a newbie for about the first week of daily driving. After that, I feel that it would teach bad habits and hide faults.

In the end, a week of so-so shifting is not going to ruin a clutch as much as years of bad muscle memory and the ensuing extra slippage.

Does double clutching do anything on these unless you're shifting to first? I always thought double cluthing was just for older transmissions and for semis to get your gear up to the speed of the driveshaft. These trannys have synchronizers to get them up to speed

    I believe 1st and 2nd are even triple synchro'd.

Swear I read it somewhere, but now can't find it. But the idea was the extra synchros make the shift smoother and easier, especially in the lower gears since they tend to be harder to hit.

Double clutching is slightly faster, especially if you skip gears or if your revs in the lower gear is quite a bit higher than your higher gear. It'll spin up your intermediate shaft so it feels like the stick gets literally sucked into the lower gear. You'll note if you single clutch in the above situations, there's a slight delay since you have to wait a slight amount for the synchro to do their job.

But the best thing I like about DC'ing is the symmetry of the movement of your feet...one goes in while the other comes out. Can't really describe it better than that. But like I said, not really necessary, but another tool in your tool box. Plus, it's fun to do! Just my own opinion, of course. But OP, you're quite a ways removed from learning this stuff. Stick with the basics. Later if you want, come back & we can discuss the "other stuff".

This could be true, maybe....this is the ONLY vehicle I've been able to shift into first while moving. I'd hafta be pretty much at a dead stop to shift into 1st on any other.

    Thanks! So multi-cone synchros for 1, 2, and 3.

Holy crap though, look at those gear ratios on the Hilux version. I want those! Improvements in basically every gear, especially 1, 6, and R.

Somebody on here was in the process of swapping one into a Tacoma, should be awesome when he is done.

I agree... Get someone to help get it home. Once there you can take your time. A bit of practice is all it takes... you'll gain a skill you will will not regret...

Enjoy your manual Transmission. It is a dying breed... If/when I get the Tacoma, it will be my very very last ever Petro-fueled vehicle. (other than our classic mini cooper!) - The other 'real' car is Electric. All future ones most likely will be as well... No MTs on EVs... In fact - no transmissions at all!

Interesting... Do you know who that was? I wonder if it is a straight bolt-on... or is there a huge amount of modification required?
I could get my hands on a Hilux 4x4 6sp MT from a diesel Hilux. Those are used to much higher torque...

I'm very close to dropping out the stock transmission to compare it.

If you can figure that out let me know. I worked on that for almost a year and had several conversations with Toyota International. I found where I could get one, I also looked at the LC-76 that is still built. We can get them in the US but you cannot license them. The diesel is not the only problem yet it has better emissions than any diesel in the US, it is safety issues, airbags and other metrics required in the US that other countries do not require.
