2019 Toyota Tacoma. Have a rpm issue not shifting. The service center tells me truck is fine it runs according to the driver it knows hiw i drive. I dont drive trying to gun it and it struggles to get to 40mph???? They reset the ecu??? And told me it should run fine now. Ive never heard a truck knowing the driver and how they drive the truck - Im a woman but NOT STUPID. Has anyone else have a issue with this on a truck with 7,000 miles !!!!! ---- also was told if i hear knocking its because the engine is built up high ?????
Why when I took it to a 2nd service center at a different dealership he said he can go in and see the faults but he didnt tell me what they were????

How long/ how many miles have you owned the 2019?

What did you drive before it?

    Welcome to the forum.

Yes, many ECU build in shift patterns based on previous driver behavior. I don't know if the ECU is easily resetable, but the dealer should certainly be more informative. Plus the new motor, the 3.5 is designed to be more efficient at higher RPMs so drive it a bit harder and see if it improves. As for trading, I am still driving my '11 AC . I put on a set of Michelin MS/2 tires in the 265/75R16 size in 2015 and haven't worn them out YET...

When you say it’s having an rpm issue and not shifting, do you mean that it’s holding a gear for a long time before shifting? If so that’s how the engine is designed. All the torque is high end so it’s going to shift at a higher rpm.

There’s been a bunch of updates issued to help correct the shifting, maybe that’s what he did. If so, he would have flashed it to the ecu and if I’m not mistaken it causes it to reset the ecu behavior it learned from your driving habits.

Yes, the truck does learn your driving style/behavior. He wasn’t BSing you.

Sound like if there’s faults he’d fix them since your truck is under warranty. Your original post isn’t that clear & it sounds like there’s more to this.

Hey, you seem very frustrated, and also all over the place. You need to document, everything, in fact, video shift points. Just point your phone at instrument cluster, when driving normally.

When they say, truck runs according to driver, somewhat true. The computer in your truck is the nerve center, it tries to adapt to the way you drive your truck, or car.

I’d take the negative battery terminal, and disconnect it for 15 to 20 minutes. This should reset your ECU. Look, document, video, everything, if it continues to act weird or not perform, you need to prove it. You may need to hire a lemon law lawyer, and don’t hesitate doing this. Legally, if you have the same problem, be specific, 3x, the EXACT same problem, and then the factory is obligated to buy your vehicle back.

Be specific, every time, and make sure they write it up the same, otherwise, they have wiggle room. People on this forum would be happy to drive, test, help with your truck, but be safe. I’d help you for sure if you were close to me.

Fault codes are recorded by your ECU, (your trucks brain), but they don’t always record a problem, if they don’t, or aren’t programmed for a specific problem. This is huge in the car biz. You can insist you go on a test drive with the service center. Show them the problem, and record it, every bit of it. I can’t stress that enough.

Best of luck, and feel free to dm me, or ask/report in this thread. Many here would love to help you.

Is it shifting so quickly through the gears that the truck bogs down with low RPMs and has a hard time accelerating without downshifting again? Assuming it's an automatic, this is mostly normal behavior with the factory tune and why some of us run a custom tune to help alleviate that.

If you stomp on the gas pedal (pedal to the floor type scenario), what happens? Does it attempt to downshift?

As others have stated the transmissions will somewhat develop it's shift patterns according to how Tacoma has been driven. Have you had TBS-0062-18 preformed? This may help, did with mine.

Another thing is that modern computerized automatic transmissions shift/perform different than older mechanical automatic transmissions and can take a little while to get use to.

I wonder if that was why Toyota got rid of the go pro mount, lots of people bringing in videos of their truck not performing as they would expect.

It sounds like going from a vehicle of yesteryear to a modern vehicle, try test driving another new Tacoma, it probably shifts very similar to yours. For the most part: Gone are the days of 3 and 4 speed transmissions and NA gas engines with lots of off idle torque.

Have you tried ECT and S modes?? A quick search will land you DAYS of reading about the driveability of these new trucks. My guess is that it is performing normally and it is very new to you, coming from the Fords.
