I just like half a bottle of that around October after I shot a nice buck. Couldn’t drink bourbon for months hahaha. Absolutely destroyed me haha.

Probably going to buy a third bottle based on your description alone. Currently have my bottle and the bottle for next year's Booker's night.

Shiny Barrel last year felt like it descended from the 2015 lineup. I'm loving what I'm hearing about Granny's Batch, though!

Best 2018 batch by a country mile and one of my favorite batches overall.

I'm at the lake house for the weekend, celebrating my birthday. My wife asked the kids what they wanted to get me for my birthday. I got probably the two sweetest gifts ever. The young one is 3, so obviously she gravitated to things that SHE likes. She picked this, but got the boy doll since it was for me.

    20200424_101447.jpg

Had a chuckle, but thought it was super sweet of her.

My oldest is 6. She told Momma to get at whiskey that Dadda has never had. Mission accomplished. This is from Austin. Stella likes to nose my whiskey and tell me what she thinks it smells like. She can tell rye from bourbon with a fair bit of accuracy!

I guess that's all a long story to say that this is W.T.F. I'm drinking. :D

Warning: what follows are the incoherent ramblings of an internet troll:rofl:

OK. Blind sampling. I have no Idea what this is. @bvbull200 wants my thoughts.

Color - very dark amber. darker than anything in my stash that I can remember. I think that could mean higher age statement or finishing barrels. - >7 years is guess here (thinking closer to 10-12)

Nose - First thing is lack of burney. Real mellow from a heat perspective. <100 proof, maybe low 90's? Soft nose that was sweet on back end. The first scents I could guess at were sweet and fruity like apples.

Taste - Medium viscosity. no initial burn. Up front and center was heavy oak followed by leather again and maybe tobacco. Very strong flavors. Again leading to more time in the barrel theory. little after burn to make me think low 90's proof. The oak and leather lingers. Potent stuff. after a couple sips the initial flavors mellowed out and there was some dark caramel, not burnt but well toasted. For the last sips, the tail end got sweeter still. like brown sugar sweet and maybe the smallest ever chocolate. That may come from me thinking of another whiskey though. more on that later.

Finish - There was some throat and back of tongue burney after exhale. The weird thing was there was just a touch of numbness feel. Like that throat spray numbing stuff. Not that flavor but a small fraction of that numb tingle. Follow up sips finished had the same profile but got mellower.

If I had to envision when I would want to drink this I would say sitting at a fire roasting marshmallows for S'mores.

At first with the thought of finishing barrel I kept thinking back to Blackened and how it was finished. That's where I may have gotten apple.
The taste profile initially was leading me straight to my trials with Balmorhea and what the description said that was supposed to taste like vs my tastes. But the follow up sips that changed is where it got interesting. I could see myself drinking a tall pour of this the way it was leading.

I'd say that I would keep a bottle of this on hand for a once and awhile treat. Not like fancy bottle high dollar treat, but scenario based. Like campfires :D
Due to the frequency of which I'd drink this I'd be comfortable paying above retail depending on secondary if needed.

    Well... How'd I do @bvbull200 ? :anonymous:

Maybe my favorite celebration bottle. Not talking super special occasion, just celebrating the little things. Love me some 1920.

I went to the @Bigdaddy4760 school of heavy pours.

I'm half in the bag and on my phone, but I'll give it a go.

@Misplaced Nebraskan 's description of the profile is really close to what I would describe it as.

Oak, leather, tobacco, slight hint of sweetness on the finish? Outstanding description and right where I'd put it. Zach, your palate is quickly becoming one I really, REALLY trust. Good on you!

What's funny is that the guess for what it is (age/proof/finishing barrel/etc.) is off, but I kind of served him the whiskey equivalent of a trick question.

Here is what I sent him:

    20200320_200915-01.jpg

It's 114+ proof and just over 5 years old. The color, char, and oak bomb suggests something much older. The tricky thing about this is that it was aged in Texas and it was barreled in a 15 gallon cask. Those two things lead to a bourbon that has more interaction with the wood and a higher ratio of surface to volume than a standard 50 gallon barrel. It's DARK stuff. Like cold brew coffee dark.

I sent it to Zach because there are plans to do a Pitfaced BBQ single barrel selection of this once this virus thing passes over. Hopefully Zach can be a part of the barrel selection.

The baby barrels yield about 40 bottles.

If this stuff is any indication, I'm excited to put my stamp on a barrel.
