My 2012 prerunner 2wd Seems like the brake bias is more toward the rear brakes than on the front ( as it would normally be on most vehicles) is this normal for tow package models.

When coming to a stop (unloaded no trailer) if I do not pump the brake pedal at least twice before coming to a full stop and then release the brake pedal to move forward again I can feel the rear brakes uncouple for the lack of a better term. It's not as smooth or seemless as I would think it should be. Truck stops straight and has plenty of braking performance overall.

just this kind of uncoupling release on the rear brakes. If I pump the pedal as I come to a stop
it does not do this. Would a brake fluid flush / bleed be in order here or something else ?

    Thanks in advance jake

Tow package brakes are the same.

Sounds like the brakes need to be bled and it also sounds like the rear brakes need the hardware cleaned and a inspection.

If you tow often you'll love these brakes:

Are you sure it's not axel wrap you are feeling, when you feel the brakes "release " ? My truck has done this since day one of ownership. It is better since the re-call springs but still there.

interestingly I checked all the recall data for this model year and options and none involved anything to do with the rear axle
or suspension. It's really hard to tell what's going on from the driver seat. I can only discribe what I feel.
The fact that pumping the brake pedal at least twice before firm pedal pressure produces like new stops.
Not doing this only produces the same level of stop at extemely slow speeds like under 20 mph.
This truck spend much of it's time in Georgia and a year in Illinois . Even though it came with the tow package
from the factory it looks as if it was never even used. Not a single sign of any marks where the safety chains
would hang from. Receiver is covered with the plastic plug and no signs it ever had a hitch ball installed.

I'm leaning more towards an inspection (as stated above) to check the system out before throwing parts at the unknown.

I do have a pair of Bilstein shocks to install on the rear so that might be when I do an inspection. Do the drums pull off easily or a pita ?

    Thanks for the advice.

I agree with this. Axle wrap and when you take your foot off the pedal what you are feeling is the tension being released from the leaf springs. Mine has done the same since purchase new. I would also check the torque of the rear leaf U Bolts and torque them to 85 - 90 Ft Lbs this helped my axle wrap issue when stopping.

Feels like a slight bump in the rear.

Yes very much like a bump from the rear. But I am also getting a brake squeal or ringing sound when the truck is cold and moving in reverse at slow speeds
So I was not sure what was the culprit if not multiple issues. I have a good ft lb torque wrench so I will check the u bolt torque when the shocks get installed.

Thanks very much all good suggestions for sure.

On real humid mornings when I reverse I sometimes get a squeal from the brakes also. Not enough for me to worry with.

I too get this, I figured it was from the light surface rust that forms on the rotors.
After the first time using the brakes, it goes away.
    It only happens occasionally.

I've had other vehicles with similar brake squeal noises but none as loud or frequent as this truck.
I kind of wonder if aftermarket linings and pads would stop the opra ...:sadviolin:
