OME BP-51 Install Report and Height Adjustment

No spacer. Really? I was a bit worried since OP posted 22" when set at 5mm. Sounds like fairly normal. But I've got maybe a hundred miles on it since installed so probably a lot of settling to do.

 

my bad I deleted as I miss read my notes my STOCK height was 20.5. I’m at about 22 3/4/22 5/8 up front at 5mm and 1/4” spacer. And 24” rear Medium duty’s with about 3k miles on them.

I wonder why your trucks sitting so much lower at 10mm pre load.

 

My truck has some weight up front, about 120#.

BP-51 settings with center of hub to fender arch:
Driver's front: 20mm with 22.5"
Passenger's front: 18mm with 23"

OME Dakar rear leaf heavy duty, with 3rd leaf removed to make it more like "medium pack"
Drivers rear: 23.5"
Passenger's rear: 24"

I'm going to leave it alone for now rather than trying to mess with the rake, to see about settling. It doesn't have nearly as much second order movement, after hitting a bump, where the whole chassis seems to settle down much faster than stock suspension. Have not had a chance to really go through the compression and rebound settings to see what they do. Somewhere I have the stock numbers before I put the bumper, winch, sliders on.

 

Looking for some insight and help. Just wasted some time trying to adjust preload and was unsuccessful. I compressed the hell out of the springs but never got any slack to spin the collar. Are you guys using a specific spanner wrench to spin the collar? is there one i can buy that's recommended or any tips to spin the collar once you've got the coil compressed? I'm waiting on some other coil compressors i'm going to try that may work better. Any tips on this are appreciated. or, if anyone recommends a shop that can do it in the CA Bay area.

So after messing with it, my dad came over and brought some tools my grandpa had made for another purpose. I was able to create a collar and compress the spring further than my first attempt and set my preload to 12mm. Will hopefully pull the passenger side in the next couple days and do the same. Will see what heights I end up at.

 

THAT good sir, is certainly my kind of setup! I love shade tree engineering. Awesome.

 

I've adjusted mine twice. When I first got them before install and after about a year after adding a bumper. The first time I tightened down the spring clamps by hand with a wrench. The second time I used my impact gun. I had the hardest time the first time simply because of how hard it is to compress the springs. I thought I was going to break something because of how much torque is needed. the second time with the impact gun i just fired away and had it done in a couple minutes.

 

Right on! My dad said the plate we used was originally made to be used as a shock tower frame puller for straightening out front end damage.

I noticed this as well. The first time I couldn’t get it tight enough with the spring compressors I was using. It felt like something was going to break going by hand. The second time with our new setup it went really smooth by hand I think because we were compressing more of the spring and at a more direct angle. Really happy with this new tool and setup. Makes adjustments easy.

 

So moving from factory 5mm up to 12mm preload, coupled with my 1/4” spacers I netted 3/4” on driver side and 1/2” on passenger side. I adjusted both coils the same however driver side coil is new from warranty and passenger has been on for about 3k miles.

I was hoping for about 1/4”~1/2” more, as I’m adding BAMF aluminum skids est 70lbs soon, but I’m happy with how it looks now. About 1~1.5” of rake with my MD Dakar’s.

 

Is that total lift numbers or more? I'm really surprised at the even smaller amount of lift in the front compared to the rears.

 

sorry bout that, that was what I gained on top of what I already had. I was sitting right at about 2” gain center hub to fender on both fronts after settling at 5mm + 1/4” spacer. Now I’m at about 2.5“~2.75” Only added weight over front axle is my Cali raised 0 degree sliders. Maybe 100 lbs total?

 

For those of you running the rear shock and rock deflector shield? Have you just removed yours? I went out on my second time wheeling and looks like the clip already came out of one. Maybe carry a few extras on board?

 

I got very activated when I was trying to install mine. I then processed to rip it off because I just had a feeling it was going to cause me to be more pissed off down the road. Then a few hours later I found it useful to make a gutter to deflect my front differential fluid into the drain pan when I did the ECGS bushing, haha.

 

BAHAHAHA that was a great laugh. I can totally picture that. I'll prolly be in the same boat next time one comes apart, ARB is sending me out a replacement clip, but i'm not expecting it to last very long.

 

Any advice for me getting my truck level? I'm currently at 10mm preload in the front. If I measure center of hub to fender flare, I'm 23" in the rear and 21" in the front. I also have 360# of sand in the bed to help with settling.

Weight sources: full aluminum skids, ARB recovery point in the front, cab rack with recovery gear/maxtrax/etc on top, Victory sliders, full size spare in the rear.

No bumper or winch up front.

 

I’m at 15mm preload and 1/4” spacers from headstrong. I have a 1.25” rake. But I’m running sliders with top plates, aluminum ifs skid, full steel bumper and winch, roof rack with recovery boards, 40” light bar, 20” light bar, squadrons and S1’s. Plus diamondback cover in the rear with medium duty springs.

 

I was stupid and didn’t measure from the center hub to the fender when I started all of this. Just from the ground to the fender (tires affect height). Here are my numbers now:

Before Lift
RD : 36.25”
RP : 36.25”
FD : 35.5”
FP : 35.75”

After Lift at 15mm and 1/4” spacers with medium duty springs and armor:
FP 38.25”
RP 39.5”
FD 38”
RD 39.5”

From the numbers, that’s 2.5”. However, the tires 33’s vs 31’s (stock) would add an inch. So, I guess I just netted 1.5” of lift in the front. Does that sound right? @blitzkrieg3002 @2ayne @TACOCAT Reversed or anyone else.

 

Wouldnt the tire size be a half inch additional height??


Thats why people measure from the center of the hub....

 

From my understanding, whatever the tire change, you divide in half. Since the tire is round and the difference in height is added across the diameter.

Example: going from factory 31's to 33's would be a 2" taller (diameter) tire. It does this by adding 1" to each side of the tire. Thus making your ground clearance (because of the tire) 1" higher.

Technically, going from 30.6" to 32.8" tires...

I believe this is correct.

 

I didn't take before lift measurements either, but I'd like at least another inch.

Could you measure from the center of the hub now? I'd like to compare. Center of hub to fender should be the same no matter the wheel or tire size.
