Hello, I just bought a 2005 X-Runner and I did not know at the time about the Tacoma head gasket issue. I decided to look at used engines just in case I have an issue down the line, but the 2 websites I went to asked me to differentiate between the X-Runner and Non X-Runner version and produced different search results.

Is there a difference between the engines? Do they still have the same head gasket problem?

    Thanks.

The xrunner came with the 4.0 v6. Other 5lugs all came with the 2.7L. The main difference between a 6lug v6 and a xrunner v6 is the xrunner has a shallower lower oil pan.

A solid upgrade would be to buy a 4wd oil pan for some extra capacity

    I have a TRD supercharger.

The 4WD oil pan is a good mod. You have to replace both the upper and lower oil pan.

For my truck I made a baffled oil pan.

This is a side by side of the stock oil pan on an X-Runner and the billet aluminum one.

If you use the 4WD pan, can you use the same oil pick up?
I could look the part # up. But I figured you would probably know?

I do not know. My guess is it will be different to suck oil out of a deeper pan.

I know several Xrunner guys have done this mod.

Unfornately the true believers of this mod have lost an engine due to the stock oil pan.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure if the 4WD used a longer oil pick up?
Did you use a longer pick up?

No. I made a spacer to move my pick up lower in the pan.

You can see the spacer in this pic.

I looked and couldn’t find a different oil pick up for the the 4WD or X/R.
I did find pictures of the upper oil pan, and to me it looks as if the upper oil pan has a drop in incline built in to lower the oil pick up tube?
But that’s just my opinion based on visual observation.

I guess what I’m saying is, the upper oil pan seems to be the drop for the pick up?
AKA, Upper oil pan does the dropping?
