My RecTec mini has died. Cost to replace parts isn't worth fixing.
I'd like something a bit bigger. I'm waiting fir a call back from RecTec Monday. If they can give few a decent discount off their 590 model, which is about $900, I'll consider it.

I just saw this at Costco:

I hadn't considered a vertical pellet smoker, but for grilling, I use my gas weber or flat top griddle, so I never used my RecTec as a grill.

Does anyone on here have a Louisiana vertical or it's Lowe's/Walmart cousins?

Thoughts on these options or others in $450-800 price range?

You can pick up this same thing as a Pit Boss at the Walmart for like $396 .. make sure you get the 5 model or larger.. the 3s are too small

I’m actually in the same sort of boat as you. When I grill burgers or wings (when I don’t smoke them), salsa, etc I use my propane side. My grill right now is a dual side by side and I love it. It was the perfect thing to learn what I would want long term without breaking the bank. I use the charcoal side basically just for smoking. So I’ll probably get one of these next time for smoking. And then a small rinky dink propane grill.

tool around Facebook marketplace. A lot of people buy one or get one as a gift and then realize they hate it and try to pawn it off. Single use vertical smokers show up all the time for cheap.

I think Walmart only sells up to the 5 series, the Costco is a 7 series it is a beast. I looked at it last year that is about the best price I think you are going to find a 7 at. Every year about this time they go on sale at that price. Both Louisiana Grills and Pit Boss are made by the same company Dawson's, and are basically the same smoker.

The controller is like other Pit Boss controllers (except the newer higher end PID controllers) and likes to start out high and stabilize for a bit. IIRC someone said a RecTec controller fits as a drop in replacement and there is also the option of an aftermarket true PID controller if you want finer control. I have been considering one for a dedicated jerky and fish smoker. But way things are going not this year.

Started this brisket up. It was initially 18lbs from Costco. I trimmed off probably 1-2 lbs of fat. Went with a simple salt and pepper seasoning and used mustard to bind. Smoking with Traeger Hickory pellets at 225F. Hope this turns out well.

Off to a good start! Cut for space reasons? Or just reducing size?

I’ve only ever had gator tail which is good. I hear if done right the ribs are really good. Not really sure how the rest of the meat is.

I haven't the faintest idea.. probably have to ask @Misplaced Nebraskan though I don't know if they ate that one or just used it to kill the chicken.
