So I got in my 16 taco this morning and while I was driving it I keep hearing a clicking noise, I come to find out it’s the truck trying to lock itself repeatedly. It’s randomly timed, sometimes 3 times in a second then once in a minute. It happens while the car is running or it’s off. It is a salvage truck that I rebuilt but I haven’t had this problem in the 3 months I’ve owned it. It just rained last night but nothing to hard and the door and hood were closed tight. I also tried to jump my Miata yesterday with no luck but I drove it for 30 minutes after with no problem. I’ll upload a video for reference

Even if I’m not hitting unlock, it’ll still try to lock while it’s already locked

The rain most likely caused a short. Is the floor board wet on the passenger side or driver side?

Not at all, everything was closed, both doors. We have some fairly torrential downpour in my parts of Virginia and last night wasn’t one of them, just a normal storm

Do you have a key that has lock, unlock feature on it or a key fob for keyless entry?
Might be a bad button/ short in it or battery getting low. Pretty sure there are settings in the head unit (at least in mine, but also not a 4cyl) to change up the door locks functions.

It’s the key with unlock and lock but no keyless entry. I thought of that and you can’t hit lock or unlock on the key while the car is running. I’ll get a new key battery later today and see if that changes anything

What were you thinking it was? What’s on the passenger front?

Ok, I need some help now!! Last night I got out of my truck while it was running to grab something from the bed and it locked me out!! I only have 1 key so I found an old coat hanger, spent 30 minutes trying to open it, and finally did. Any suggestion at all to what it could be??

Unfortunately there's just no telling what's wrong, especially on a salvage vehicle. I'd get it to a good tech, that can actually diagnose. Dealer techs do have the advantage of playing pick a part in the parts department, so they can often do it cheaper than you, as often electrical components are not returnable.
Get you a couple extra keys while you're there too.
    Good luck

When the truck locked - did it do it three times ??? (per split bolts post ?)

One other reason for the truck to lock - I believe the doors will lock if it thinks it's in gear and moving above xx mph. I think I'd check any sensors/connectors for ingear/speed sensors and all the in door "locked" switches first .... JMO

So I’m not sure if my truck has that feature or not. It’s the manual, I’ve only know it to do it on the auto trucks. But it didn’t auto lock at any speed before I started having this problem. It does it when the car is off so I don’t thinks it’s an auto locking problem anyways. But I didn’t some investigating to see how it happens, so it happens when the drivers door moves, either pushing on it or from body roll of the car. Very strange, could it be the ground wire got chopped and every time it touches a piece of metal its locking?

Also I figure out you can’t lock your car with the window down (while turned on) so at least I don’t have to hear click-click-click all the way down the road in the summer :) I better figure it out before winter rolls around here in Virginia!

If it's related to the door movement - I'd check and adjust the door closed switch. Perhaps the wiring at the switch is loose, wires hitting the body (completing the circuit to ground), the switch is bad - or, my first choice, the switch needs to be adjusted out so it hits the door more .... For a quick check, You could just tape a 1/8" thick piece if 1" square wood to the door where the door ajar button hits the door to see if this fixes the issue ...

We had a '72 Wagon & on a trip in '73 the door locks kept trying to lock even when locked. Finally had to pull the fuse for the electric locks, but that took out other features - so no solution.
Ended up being a wire in the door loom had been cut too short & opening/closing the door allowed that wire to pull out enough that there was random connection of that wire, completing the lock function circuit randomly.
Your situation sounds similar, random connection.

Hope you enjoy wiring, because if you do you've got a fun brain teaser.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Its rare, but I’ve had lock actuators do this. The last one I did was caused by the driver front lock actuator.

Modern Toyota lock actuators are famous for failing
