I've been in many that don't tick... If there's enough that don't tick, then maybe there's hope of fixing mine?

Trust me, if it ticks, you know it does. I think select ones have a cam to bucket (valve clearance) issue.

Everyone's does... There are a few mods that quiet it down a little but they say it doesn't fully go away.

I respectfully disagree. My sister owns a new one that does not tick and the three I test drove did not tick at all.
My 2011 ticks bad but the dealer says it par.

I would like to pull the valve covers and verify the valve clearance. It is hard to believe that a fairly new engine (22k) would have so much valve train noise. I've only been around engines and working on them for 35 years or so (started helping dad with the stockcar)... but what do I know...

I did not vote, since my Tacoma has a tick that I can only hear when I am at a drive-through window. I think this is pretty typical of Toyota engines- I have owned five 'Yotas. I don't know why people get upset about this- it is like saying my Chevy goes "Vroom" when I step on the gas.

If you are really upset by it- I have seen a thread where a member put rubber gaskets under one of the automatic valves (EGR? I think) in the engine. Do a search and see.

Also, there was a TSB for earlier model second gens where they replaced the exhaust header to remove ticking noise.

Not sure if either of these work very well.

I only hear tapping when I am running in 1st or 2nd gear at low RPMs. Nothing really annoying but I am use to it. At the higher RPMs, my K&N 63 Series Hot Air Intake starts making a hard sucking noise so the ticking noise goes away....

sadly, I've only put Husky Liners in it thus far - tend to blow all my cash on my bikes and guitars.
I've got an 08 4.0L that has ticked basically since I've bought it........took it in a couple different times and dealer told me it's normal piston noise -- but it only ticks on 1 cylinder that I can tell........they didn't do any repair, and no advice as to what I can do to eliminate it........I've tried running Lucas oil additive, and it helps just a little bit but still doesn't quit ticking........I think it's got to be a valvetrain issue, something has to be out of spec for it to make this kind of noise

    ^^ this

Why did you start another thead? You already have this one: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/technical-chat/113926-2011-new-info-ticking-valve-train.html

Just to find out if they all tick, and why did you vote that your truck has no tick at all?

Tick is related to that VSV valve on the driver side. I had to install mesh into my airbox to prevent rodents eating my air filter after that tick is gone. I am guessing there is more vacuum now so vsv opens and closes with a load instead of just cliquey clack:D
EDIT I am guessing those 8 with no tick have either better filters or partially clogged filters or like me some kind of mesh in front of the filter that obstructs air.
Funny my fuel mileage went up after that, not by much but still it went up.

My bad.... this was my first poll and I was clicking around to make sure only one option could be selected and inadvertetly clicked vote with the wrong option... Make no mistake, I have option C: the tick both inside and outside. I can even hear it under light loads at highway speeds.

Really no point, I know what you talking about and it has nothing to do with engine itself. Even FJ's had he same thing:)

Then you should know that, its virtually impossible to adjust all gaps out of a Shim under bucket valve train, and that an aluminum engine can transmit noise thru it very efficiently.

People forget that all engines make noise, and "ticking" sounds. Many manufactures engineer sound dampening into the engine to some degree. This may make the engine sound quiet. More so than other engines. This is a common practice for cars, where a quiet interior is a selling point. For trucks, its not that high of a priority, and if the manufacture can save a few bucks, then they do. Cast iron blocks absorb sound better than aluminum ones do. On the Toyota 1GR engine, there is very little sound dampening built into it. Many things are attached to the heads, and block with no dampeners. This can amplify the sound to a degree.

I had my second opinion at a different dealership this morning and they too told me ALL TACOMAS TICK but I started this new thead because I have first hand knowledge that not all of them do. I wanted to get a better feel for the percentage of those that do vs don't.

About the vote: My bad.... this was my first poll and I was clicking around to make sure only one option could be selected and inadvertetly clicked vote with the wrong option... I meant to vote option C.

They all do. If you find one thats "quiet", it will start ticking. The emissions system is one of the things making the "ticking" sound heard. Hell.....Sometimes I notice my truck is quiet, and THEN I start to wonder whats wrong...
