Yeah, it is Soft Iron. Found it at Home Depot for $6 a can. Only used 1 can to do 3 coats.

Pick a nice bright color. Paint 3-4 coats. After dry, take it by hand and rub it over some rocks for authentic scratches. Re install.

This procedure assures the folks in the mall can

    1) see that you have a skid plate

    2) see scratches and think you actually needed it.

    Win win.

On a more serious note, this is one place the cheap black spray bedliner is actually useful. And easy to touch up when it does get marred.

Updated OP with result. Went Soft Iron grey on skids. Matches my graphite wheels. Will post pics of that later. Will feel it out for a bit, but might go black.

So due to some overzealous grinding on the soft aluminum OEM gray skid plate, I am going to go black bedliner to fill in the gouges. Good enough.

One thing I noticed today while pulling off the smaller thin metal "skid plates" is rust and a bunch of mud, dirt, and crap that filled where this mount is on the crossmember. It left a bunch of deep surface rust on the plate, and took water, soap, and compressed air to clean all the crap out of it. Tomorrow, I'll get in there with a brush before painting.

This is maybe a quarter of the crap that came out of it by poking with a screwdriver and pounding with a dead blow hammer.
