I'm from Riverside. Wheeled all over the San Berdoo mountains. There actually is some good stuff up there. A lot of good trails down in the deserts near Palm Springs and Victorville areas too.

If your rear diff grenaded under warranty, you can definitely have it replaced. I had mine done before anything bad happened, and they found a ring gear that was going out. Tons of reading

What is the connection between a rear differential failing/ being covered under warantee and A-TRAC?

I may be wrong but I see this as an argument for keeping it stock and a-trac having another advantage.

Yea but if you had non-TRD offroad truck you would not have to worry about your R&P exploding.
$3800 for TRD OF and smaller harder to get gear.
$1700 for two ARB's inside stronger gears that are stocked by everybody. hmmmm
let me think about that... :burnrubber:

What's to think about? If you grenade your factory diff, replace with a non e-locked third member a go to ARBs. Bonus: You now have a compressor for OBA.

There's no law saying that if you break something, you have to replace it with that same something. You're right - if you HAVE to replace the third member, do it up with the SR5 and throw an ARB in. However, if you don't break your diff in the first place, what me worry?

I dont have true Sport, only bought Limited Slipp and suspension. Actually suspension came with LSD option $350:D on top of Sr5 package. Could not resist. Suspension is now the same as TRD OF thanks to TSB ;)
Crappy LSD? It works plus it can be sold or installed in another vehicle if I want to switch to ARB's. But dont have to change gears and worry about strenght. Plus with out traction controls I can run anything (including solid axle and big tires) that can fit under that truck with out affecting traction control.

Those additional "futures" you quoting are dependent on brakes and sensors

here is what can happen when you overly depended on brakes...

Discredit?! Dont you think that for almost $4K extra you should get better.

Works for me so far, I need 4x4 just to get home in winter so I am fully aware what it can and can not do.
Still for $350 it was good buy since the only cheaper traction device is lock right.

in 2gen ... Money, currently rebuilding my other truck which is sucking my funds but I want things to work perfect. Also my other truck has lockers :D two of them :humble:

    ......And no warranty,
......and I for one have no use for the hassles of a front locker.
......The cheezy Ring & Pinion is the strength issue, not ATRAC
.......No major mods permitted on a lease
.......And with ATRAC, just turn it on and forget it

Yup, I've walked through obstacles with my rear locked, that a Green TRD Sport with ATRAC yellow mod thing had a hell of a time with.

You shouldn't have your locker on if you aren't in a situation that you need it for.

    No.

The fact that it's SFA is irrelevant. 3 wheels on the ground on an IFS truck is the same thing as 3 wheels on the ground on a SFA truck.

Have you ever been in a situation where you can absolutely say, for a fact, that IFS is the reason that you had to winch/get pulled?

A lot of people on here all say "I want to SAS my truck cause it's badass and it's needed!!" but many of them are never in a situation where IFS is what is the limiting factor.

Imagine this, you're on 3 wheels on the very edge of a washout. Your ass is all puckerd up. With a locker, you have smooth delivery of power. It's easy to control your vehicle, even though its on 3 wheels. With A-TRAC, you have power surges. One of those surges can start you off on getting down the hill rather quickly and uncomfortably.

Here's my philosophy on proper usage of a transfer case and locking diff.

Go into 2Lo (you 2nd gens cant do this without twin sticking), put it into 4Lo whenever you arrive at an obstacle you cant get over in 2. Once done, go back to 2Lo. Get to another obstacle you need 4wd, put it in 4Lo. Still need more? Then lock it.

There's absolutely no reason to run in 4Lo + Locked when you can do it in 2Lo.

I'd take a front locker over front ATRAC any day.

I think a lot of us will be happy when you quit insisiting on a product (you haven't even bothered to put you money where your incessently moving mouth is), and buy a locker. Till then the rest of us will discuss what we own and use. Ad you can go on pontificating about a product that you don't have, use, or even have a use for.
It's always great when a pavement bound city slicker tries to tell me what does, and doesn't work. Remember, us OR owners have one more locker than you, with full warranty.

A reg cab is basically the same wheelbase as a unlimited.

the stronger after market is nice, but realistically how many options do you need for one product?

Buy a first gen reg cab, SAS it, and you'll have something that is more reliable than a unlimited, and just as, if not more, capable. and it'll be cheaper

and if you want room for 5, get a 4runner. same wheelbase as reg cab taco

This thread has reverted to the off topic "lockers are the best" crap.
How about this, if you are biased towards lockers, and don't have a truck with ATRAC, maybe refrain from posting speculation........

well, i hope you've done your research on unlimiteds and unlimited rubis.

basically, D30s suck (whats up front in unlimiteds) and the D44s that come in the rubis are not TRUE 44s, but they're a D30/D44 hybrid
