16in Steel Wheels for 33in (285/75r16) tires w/ Tundra Brake upgrade

Hi all,

I realize this question has been asked hundreds (if not thousands) of times.
Yes, I have tried the search bar.

I'm looking for new wheels and tires for my 2004 4x4 Double Cab with an OME lift. I plan on upgrading the brakes to Tundra brakes in the future.
I understand that I will need to perform the good 'ol hit the pinch welds with a BF hammer mod to fit 33s.

What backspacing will I need to fit 33s? (285/75r16, open to other size suggestions)
Will I need to go with 17s instead of 16s to fit the bigger Tundra calipers?

I’d have to look up the specs on the wheels I bought for the same purpose - 33s and tundra brakes. They are 16x8 not sure of the back spacing. One hack I used was shopping for wheels that “fit” a 2005 tundra on those website firms that guides

2 types of steelies and one of them works for the tundra brake upgrade. the one will all circles around and no oval

 

Most 16" wheels will fit Tundra caliplers, so you'll likely be fine there - but once you know the wheels you want, feel free to post up here and people can tell you if they've tried them. @ekul310's suggestion of checking if they fit a 2005 Tundra is a great one as well!

Backspacing won't really affect whether you can fit 33's - it will just affect where you will rub/have to clearance

• more backspacing means clearancing on the inside/frame side
• less backspacing means clearancing on the outside/fender side

Stock backspacing is 4.5", so if you find something that's between 4.5" and 3.5" backspacing, you'll be good. More than 4.5" and you start to get into cases where you can rub your tire on the spindle (which you can correct with wheel spacers if need be).

You can go with 2000-02 Tundra steelies, if you are looking for a 16 x 8 wheel

 

Print one of the files out in landscape mode. It will give you a fitment gauge to check if wheel will fit.

These fit over tundra calipers but they require spacers to prevent rubbing.

 

im thinking of selling my methods 17" and going to at 16" micky thompson classic which looks to be about the perfect specs to run 285's, maybe something you can look into since they look pretty similar to the steel bullet hole style too which imo is the best looking for 1st gens

I should mention that I have the Ivan Stewart TRD wheels on the truck right now. According to the link below, they are 16x8, but I couldn't find what the backspacing is.
The good news is that they fit a 2005, Tundra.

Does anyone know what the backspacing on the TRD Ivan Stewart wheels is?
Has anyone ran 285/75r16s on a 1st gen Tacoma with these wheels? (Also open to alternate size suggestions as long as they're ~33s)

Thanks for the Info Turbo, love your truck it looks really good. I like the steel wheels, but I am curious where the two front steel wheels came from? I know you got them from a friend, are they spares off a tundra? where would I be able to find some?

The fronts were spares off an 01-04 Tacoma, which have all round holes. The rears were spares from a 2nd gen Tacoma, which is where you see the oval hole (and those won't fit).

So, what you're looking for are those 01-04 Tacoma spares. I'm not sure that many really know the difference as they sell them though, so that's where the difficulty is going to come in.

285/75 are kinda wide for a 7” wheel IMHO. I wonder if that could possibly cause more rubbing issues? Depending on where the OP lives the tundra slotted steelies-like in my earlier photo- may not have the correct backspacing or in my case there was Ice collecting in behind the bolt plate giving me some out of balance issues. One of the reasons I went to 16x7, that and I like skinnier tires.

 

This is a great point. Generally for a 285/75/16 you need 7.5" wheels minimum. Probably depends on the installer in any case.

I too am a fan of skinnier tires - less rubbing, less friction, lighter. @thereggierock - you might consider 255.85/R16; similar diameter (around 33") but an inch or so narrower.

Makes sense. Hey when you look at all those older rigs that made all these tracks all over the place, they ran skinny tires, tall sidewall, seems like you get a bigger useful footprint when you air down, longer as well as wider. Check out the you tube vids of the flat fender Willy’s rigs going all over Moab, Rubicon etc.
Might graduate up to 255 someday, but I like 235/85s and they have a nice price point which my aching wallet likes..

 

anyone know if the 16x8 TX pro rims will fit the tundra brake upgrade? highly considering those ones in the TW marketplace but just wanna make sure they fit before i get them shipped

 

if it's a Toyota rim they tend to fit. the 2nd Gen came with the 231mm brakes already

could have the person print out the template but not sure the same specs for hub and disc backspacing
