Drive an ecoboost truck. Going turbo isn't a bad thing.

Couldn't agree more, my 3.5 ecoboost was a blast. If only they sounded as good as the V8...

My only issue with the turbo is longevity and reliability. I still subscribe to the "there's no replacement for displacement" mindset.

I’ve seen a lot of talk about boosting the seemingly invincible 4 banger motors. How do those motors hold up when hooked up to a turbo or supercharger? Seems like Toyota would probably try to slap a turbo on that motor when they move to boosting all of their trucks in 2024.

That is what I am thinking as well. The v6 will probably be gone in the Tacoma and replaced with a turbo 4.

If they spend the time to do it right, it'll be reliable. No reason to think turbocharging isn't reliable unless they penny pinched the wrong thing somewhere down the line. Is there more that can go wrong? Yes. But there isn't necessarily a reason to think one is more reliable than the other simply out of complexity.

Reliable within what context? The standard ownership term (120k miles max?), or long term?
No way a forced induction motor will be the 300k+ beasts the Toyota legend is built on. All that heat eventually cooks everything to death. My 2003 WRX experienced heat death of all the hoses at 150k.

Tell that to diesel owners. I know there's at least 1 2.7 ecoboost over 300K miles.

I would argue it's not fair to compare a turbodiesel to a turbo gas motor. After all, one is fueled by Victorian era hatred and coal.

What he said. Road Tractors with 1 million plus miles on the engines that are turbo charged.
And think about all the construction equipment. Diesels running thousand of hours.
I know it's not apples to apples. But if designed and maintained properly. Boosted engines will last.

Comparing industrial grade turbodiesels to consumer turbo gas motors. I'm out, someone else fight this.

Like I said it's not apples to apples. And I don't see a consumer grade turbocharged gasoline engine running 1 million miles.
But I see no reason Toyota couldn't build one to last 300,000 miles.

Commercial Diesel engines fail. All day.
The engines fail because the components fail. Every downed series 60 in my garage has a perfectly fine engine block ...but everything around it could be toast. Those engines that clock beaucoup miles only last because they have been constantly repaired. Components constantly replaced. The only thing on an engine that sees 1 million miles is the block. It goes through turbos, sleeves, pistons and rings etc...but really it’s just the block that’s kept during that time.
See, in the commercial Diesel engine corner of the world, we replace the turbos twice fortnightly. It’s all part of the cost of operating equipment like that. They fail. It’s just what it is. Diesel engines require boost to do what they need to do, and Commercial/heavy typically requires big ass Diesel engines. Point is, those million mile engines, aren’t really million mile engines.

A Toyota turbo will not shit the bed on startup... But it will be the weakest and most expensive link on the truck.

Hopefully Toyota will put together a better turbo motor than Ford. I had nothing but issues with my 2018 Raptor (oil getting into the intercooler, cam phase sensors going bad, turbo leaks, etc...) all before the truck had 5k miles on it ‍♂️
