Question? Why is the 2018 Tacoma rated so poorly and as a Do Not Buy by Consumer Reports when its basically the same as 16,17,19?

Consumer Reports is never Tacoma friendly, I wouldn't put much stock in their opinions.

Looks like it got dinged in their reliability data. Fuel pump recall and a recall on master brake cylinder.

    Also, transmission issues.
All of the gen 3s are not rated as well there as the gen 2s.

Consumer reports ain't bad. They're not great and sometimes entirely clueless on some subjects, but worth checking out.

I generally do the opposite of what Consumer Reports says, with great results. Don't get me started on the expensive appliances that lasted 2 years even though CR said they were the best thing ever. Those guys really don't have a clue, you're better off tossing a coin.

Because they use TW as one of its sources. ...:crapstorm::D

I use to have a 2ng Gen Tacoma. Loved it. I like this site for its opinions of the posters and some good information. I still enjoy seeing how the Tacoma is doing. I do notice that for the most part anything negative said about the Tacoma is not well received. I test drove a 2016 when I was looking to get back to a midsize truck. At the time Toyota was not willing to bargain. I could not bring myself to pay what they were asking for a Tacoma OR. Same for the Chevy/GMC twins. Ended up with a Frontier. Is it as good as a Tacoma, maybe not. With 3+ years of ownership I have no real complaints.

a frontier is NOT as good as a Tacoma. Don’t kid yourself. Plenty of people here, including myself, did own one. Yes the frontier did some things right: fully boxed in framed metal tracks in bed and around edges, solid motor.... but there are way more problems.

there is a reason it hasn’t changed or been redesigned for 15 years.

So its not as good in your opinion. Seems to me that from 2010 on the 4l and transmission has been pretty reliable. Since I doubt I will have more than 70K in 10 years I will bank it will make it that far.

It is easier for people to complain than to praise something. Reading TW could make someone shy away from the Tacoma. Just look at the issues and problems listed. Look at the complaints in getting warranty work. Look at home many complain the mechanics are no good at the dealerships.
I also say drive what you like. Glad your happy with your Tacoma. For me it was too expensive for what it was offering.

My frontier has been good enough over the last 12 years that it would be really hard to sell me a taco at taco prices.

Especially after hanging out around here

well I mean I guess you could call it my opinion. But when Nissan refuses to take responsibility for the error and forces the $5-6k repair on the owner, it’s kind of more than just my opinion. And the fact that the dealer discovered the issue on my truck that was not supposed to be in the “group” of affected trucks, and then tried to hide it from me just shows me it’s the opinion of Nissan that the truck is flawed too. That or it would be way to expensive to repair all of the affected trucks so they just ignore it.

I haven’t had any issues with my tacoma, and I do see people here very vocal about their trucks, some of which are pretty minor issues, and others with major issues. But by what I’ve seen, Toyota stands by their product and fixes the issues. You get what you pay for, and with Nissan, it’s much less.

I would bet that every manufactor of cars has at least one owner who had a repair not covered under warranty. Even Toyota.

My personal experience with Nissan with my frontier and my wife's Maxima has been excellent. There are good dealers and bad ones no matter what brand you buy. Sorry you had a bad experience.

The brz and frs were rated differently for reliability by consumer reports. They're the same car except for the badge and cosmetic stuff like the front bumper and headlights.

Again, they were literally the same car but rated differently for reliability. Since that, I dont believe anything they say.

Face it, your 3 gen isn't the truck the 2nd gen was. The new truck aims at the tech crowd, with no tech....

Can confirm my 2018 is a fucking lemon. Issue after issue... 30k miles and ive had the radar sensor replaced under tsb, the brakes failed before the recall, pedal assembly and clutch MC replaced under squeeky pedal tsb that took 5 attempts for them to acknowledge the problem.. 10k miles later its fucked up again, my sun visor fell out of the socket, the surging tsb software update to 04A71 was done, my clutch is making very audible rattle when cold i suspect the TO bearing is jacked from driving on a failed clutch MC for 20k miles, my fuel pump has been recalled under safety issues but no solution is available, and i suspect my crank position sensor is goin out.

They gave me the super premium platinum waranty package after the brake failure... whooptie fuckin doo.

I am pretty fuckin disappointed in my first new car purchase.

With all the global economic part sourcing all vehicles have sourcing from whoever's the cheapest!, I remember a little while back this guy at my work was exited to show me his Italian made Aprilia motorcycle...I pointed out that wasn't entirely "Italian" when I showed him on the side of his radiator a little tag that said "made in India"...
Before I choose the Tacoma I too read on the competitors forums...they're the same...Aisin makes most transmissions, fuel that has junk in it called Ethanol...many factors, not to mention that a lot of the components or even fully are made or will be in some third world country where they aren't payed to care...sorry
