Do you fish for Gaff Topsail Catfish?
(I know, you can hardly avoid them sometimes).
Some fishermen consider them a nuisance, because they're fishing for something else, like Sea Trout.



When I was a kid we'd visit my grandparents at their beach house in Perdido Beach, AL.
Beach is kind of a misnomer.
There's a long barrier island a mile off Perdido.
So no surf, and a "beach" a few feet wide.

Anyway, I'd catch Topsail Catfish off Grandpa's little pier.
Big ones.
Grandpa would nail the head to a pine tree, cut the skin all around the head and pull the skin off in one go with pliers.
Then cut away the fillets.

My Grandpa said they were good eating if caught off a sandy bottom.
Throw 'em back if you caught them off mud flats.

Though there's a great old-fashioned diner here that serves Hog Maw.
