What if...Old School Bias Ply Tires???

I am just old enough to have a fond memories of tall skinny bias ply tires. Back in the day, I switched my radial tires over to tall skinny bias ply highway tires for my 1979 Chevy 1/2 ton and thought they were great. I suspect tall skinny old school bias ply mud tires might look great on the 4x4 Tacomas.

Anyone here ever tried it or considered it? It would be a bit nuts. But...

You will hate bias ply tires on any modern vehicle.

 

Bias play mud tires such as interco super Swamper tsl are awesome for off road

 

Offroad only. I would never drive on a bias ply truck tire on road. They are rock hard, so terrible ride and poor any weather performance.

They belong on tractors.

 

Off road, bias tires rule, way stronger then a radial. Not so good at flotation unless you get a wide ass tire.

 

Lots of motorcycle tires are bias

 

Why not a radial tire with an old skool bias ply look?

 

Not sure how bias-plys perform off-road, but I do remember driving quite a few classic 50’s and 60’s cars that had them. The road could be flat and straight and all of a sudden the steering wheel would do a quick death wobble for no apparent reason......

 

I had an '86 Toyota 4wd truck with bias ply swampers on it and I drove that thing everywhere with no problems that I can recall.

A 79 Chevy was my first vehicle! They work great on a 90% off road truck. Ride like shit until your under 15psi. I would never have them on a truck that sees much street time. As already stated they do kick serious ass off road. Those aren't skinny and its not a Tacoma but close enough.

 

Bring back the g78-15! As mentioned the bias ply tires still live on in the off road world. They are much better suited for off road use because they adapt to lower air pressure much better than steel belted tires.

I had a customer once that insisted on bias ply tires for his 68 Camaro. He claimed that the car wasn't designed for steel belted tires and it would perform better with bias ply. As much as I tried to convince him he was wrong, he insisted he knew more than I did so I took his money. He ended up paying triple the price for bias ply over steel belted. The bias ply tires were twice the price of the steel belted. After driving them for a week, he came back and bought the steel belted tires I told him to buy to begin with. He said the bias tires had too much grip and his wife needed a more comfortable ride. I simply smiled and took his money.

 

Wish my Duratracs came in a 255/85/16 size.....

 

There are a few of us that run bias ply for offroad and there is a reason that most tires today are radials.

Went to the Deetone website, checked out the height of the various 16 inch tires. The 7.5x16 are 32.2 inches and the 8.25x16 are 33.6 inches tall. They do not give the tire weight. I suspect they are rather heavy. https://deestonetireusa.com/bias-light-truck/

For work as a cross country surveyor I drove 4wd IH Travel-all's thousands of both on and off road miles on bias tires that looked like 'military' tires.

Suspension masked "rough" in those vehicles. They were fine off road as long as you weren't in ball bearing sand (skinnies). And they were sketchy on wet pavement.

I only rolled one of those trucks over though (on wet interstate) so I did good. Right?

 

Bias ply on a wet roads takes the excitement to a whole other level! My grandmother had a Travelall. I loved riding in that beast. That little old lady drove the hell out of that thing.
