Why Did You Chose Your 5 Lugger

Did you love the look of it? Was it because you don't go off-roading? Don't need the towing capacity of a 6 lugger? Wanted to save some $$$? Or was it another reason

For me it was because I don't go off-roading nor do I need the power of a 6 lugger or 4x4 5 lugger. I've been riding in a truck since I was a kid in my dad's T100 and even now in his Tundra when we go fishing. The reg. cab tacoma seemed to be the best option for my situation. Although it doesn't ride as high as the prerunners/6 luggers may ride, that's something I'll have to deal with and put the ego to the side. And is exactly why they have lift kits

Same here. Save $$$. Dont go offroading and not planning on towing stuff. Got an access cab so im able to recline and throw my junk in the back =) love my taco

 

A bigger truck wasn't in the budget for me, and of all the smaller trucks I drove, this one fit the bill perfectly. Love my little 5 lugger...considering how much I drive, I don't think I could afford a bigger truck at this point in my life.

 

It was the right price and there wasn't much available at the moment.

If I could do it all over again I honestly wouldnt have bought it. Not that there's anything wrong with the truck (other than 4 broken BJ Brackets in a year leading to a bent frame and 2 new sets of suspension), Just would have been much cheaper to build what I have on a 6 lug, plus it would be stronger.

Now that my truck is as modded as it is though I will never get rid of it. I plan on just dropping in a new motor when this one quits on me. Not worth selling it for the amount of time and money ive invested to build it. Kind of attached after all ive been through building it.

 

I wanted a little truck and looked at all the options, Canyon, Colorado, Ranger, and Tacoma. Out of all of them, the Tacoma got my vote. I was ok with 2 wheel drive and liked the regular cab and the color(Pyrite Mica) They worked with me on the price and we made the deal.
If I had to do it over again, I think I would have held off for a while because money got tight soon after I signed the paperwork but it's no big deal. I would like to lift mine some day and get a little bigger tires on it for a better height and to feel more stable but that will have to wait for now.

 

I wanted a Regular Cab & Regular Cab Pre-Runners are not available in PR unless you find one used imported. No need for an Access Cab Pre-Runner V6 since V6 is overkill for my daily use with no offroading and most roads I drive on are 45mph or less, MPG though is important for me so I4 > V6. Don't like driving cars and sometimes need a bed to carry stuff. No other Regular cab is as comfortable as the Tacoma unless you go fullsize. The I4 on the Tacoma is about the most or the most powerful of the available 4 cylinders in midsize pickup trucks.

 

Economy. Don't need any more power than my 4-banger, and the ride height is MUCH better suited for my wife with rheumatoid arthritis. It became her primary vehicle very quickly, even though she huffed and puffed during the buying process about "men and their trucks".

I chose the 4 X 2 regular cab because it fit my budget. If I would have had more money to spend, I would have bought the 4 X 2 access cab. I only looked at Toyota. The five lugger does cut down on your choice of aftermarket wheels, otherwise it's perfect for my needs.

 

I needed a vehicle quick b/c my last ride got totaled in an accident. I was about to get a ranger, but found the taco on craigslist. It only took driving it once to know I liked it better than the ranger. I kind of wish I'd gotten a 4wd, but I could not have afforded it at the time and it's not really necessary where I drive offroad. As far as a truck goes, it meets my needs for hauling me, the gf, the dog and cargo.

 

One stipulation for me was it has to be rated at >20 mpg in the city (my parents didn't want a truck). So I wanted to get a 2.4 which only came in 5 lug. IfI were to do it again, I'd definitely go with a 2.7 4X4

 

Don't forget that the X-runner is a 5 lug. Or is this about 4x4 vs 2WD? I'm assuming it's about the 4x4 vs 2WD thing.

1. Price - If I had more money to spend I probably would have gotten a car and then just rent a truck when I need one. Not that I don't like the truck...

3. I have no need to go off road. The truck is more than capable enough for me.

Here's one: Why would Toyota make so many variations on the same truck? 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder, regular cab, extended cab, double cab, 2WD, 4x4, 5 lug, 6 lug, short bed, long bed, 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, 4-speed automatic, 5-speed automatic, bucket seat, bench seats, etc... I'd like to see financial breakdown of why they needed to have two different sets of hubs, brakes and wheels for the same truck. Could it possibly make financial sense to design, build and support bench and bucket seats that are only available in certain models? How many parts are interchangeable between all of the different sub-models with the same model name? Very little.

 

good point boring, but this is definitely a 5 lug comparison - 4x4's and x-runners are definitely up for discussion though! Good point on what you say about the different variations I wonder if anyone on TW knows?

 

well tacoma's have very limited package and suspension options compared to most trucks, especially full size trucks, so i don't really see it as too many variations.

i think one of the reasons for the 5 lug suspension option is the fact that when toyota trucks were first made, 5 Lug trucks meant 2WD, while all the 6 lug trucks were 4WD. i think that they just kept with that, but the addition and popularity of the PreRunner models kinda smeared the logic behind the 5 lug. and i think that some people rather have a lower truck, rather then a 4WD without the 4WD.

and the reason why i bought the 5 lug is the fact that it was THE cheapest truck they made. and i was looking at a used access cab and they were around the same price, so i just went with the new truck. plust 5 lugs have suspensions that you can SLAM. well kinda, not as much as before. but at least you can lower them lol.

 

I just wanted a truck really bad. I like the fact that I can just toss whatever I don't want in my cabin into the bed and not worry, like sweaty clothes, muddy gear and stuff in general...stuff I wouldn't put in a trunk. Settled on the tacoma because of price, reliability, mpg and the capability to go and do what cars can't. I have an 08 access cab and love it. Just wish aftermarket suspension parts weren't so limited and expensive for the good stuff. Saving up though!

 

The price, mine was free. But I did pay alot for it. My grandfather left it to me a little over a year ago, but I am thankful that I am able to "ride with him" daily.

 

I just wanted something new to drive. My parents wanted to give me our 2001 Camry, but I can drive that anytime I want . I just wanted something different.

Within 3 months of having it..I started to take an interest in modding. Now I regret getting this over a car because it's sooo slow .

So I have to make the best of what I got lol

 

parents gave me mine. and it was a truck. and thats all i wanted. then i found tacomaworld. now i want long travel and a turbo. plus my truck eats v6 and v8 trucks and some cars.

 

I lost a lot of money on a shitty business deal so I decided to go back to school. I basically just needed something reliable and cheep. I looked at an 07 Tacoma with 16000 miles at the dealership and they wanted 13000 for it. I test drove it and liked it so I went online to see what the new ones cost. Found out that I could get a new one with two years scheduled maintenance included for 14800. Seemed like a no brainer to just by the new one.

 

Manual tranny is where it's at! I don't feel slow at all when I keep her up in the power band.
