We don't fly enough to really make an annual fee worth it, ultimately.

I did out the math - Chasing categories with the chase card would make sense, but if I stick to just one card, the rotating 1% brings my total rewards lower than if I use my TD Cash/Savor card - 3% restaurants, 2% grocery, 1% all else - the math works out I get more rewards with that, then using the Chase, and not hunting for rewards.

Back to cards. You guys should check out the B of A cash back cards. I get 5.25% back (in cash, deposited to my checking account) on the category I choose, then other amounts in various categories. Also no annual fee.

I'm sure it's fine, but I am anti-Bank of America enough to say NOPE.

Yep - gotta consider costs vs perks and make the decision that makes sense.

My primary card is a Citi DoubleCash Mastercard - 2% cash on everything - no fee, warranty extension, etc.

My second-most-used is probably my Sams' Club Mastercard as it's always 5% on gasoline purchases anywhere, 3% on restaurants/travel. Comes as cash - but once a year vs throughout the year. As we have no expectations of ditching our Sam's membership that's okay.

I try to remember the quarterly category stuff such as with my Chase Freedom, but it can be tough. I don't religiously chase those things, but remember when I remember. :)

Back to topic, decided to get back into VTI this morning. We'll see which way it goes.

I used to just use my chase card for everything, assuming it made the most sense to use it for the rotating 5% and only getting 1% elsewhere was fine. But then I was curious if my quicksilver (1.5% on all) made more sense and out-weighed the 1%. I just use one card for it all, rather than try to rotate through them, so this was to figure out what made the most sense to just set it and forget it. Turns out, it was my TD Cash Card - the Capital One savor is the same rewards structure.

    I had some free time....

    Rewards Analysis.jpg

    Edit:
Categories are Gas, Groceries, Restaurants top to bottom. Let alone the "rest" of the spending. This was pulled from Mint, all my transactions back to about 2015 pulled out in CSV and then pivot table for total per year, then divided evenly to each quarter as an estimate. It's not perfect, but it works.

I mean, yes there is also the deciding factor of moral obligations with a company too. But even aside from that, their CS makes Comcast look like saints. NO. THANK. YOU. I "boycott" few things. There's Bank of America, and HOAs. Otherwise I'm pretty easy going.

    Except the Nissan Juke.

I decided early on that I am going to ignore companies' political views (unless they're too extreme). If you looked into every company and their stances, it would be hard to invest at all, and you'd miss out on too much potential to make money.

Yeah, though as you imply, it depends.

I won't order anything from Penzey's - but am happy to patronize TheSpiceHouse. One is active in politics and injects it into their business, the other stays out of it and just runs their business.

Yeah, there's a few maybe I'd consider, but as a joe schmo investor, I really don't care - nothing I do will change the game, and all I'd do is lose out on early retirement. I am not significant, I'm okay with that :D

BUT I hate Bank of America. For the same reason as HOAs - I hear so many horror stories, I am in the boat that I want to prevent the chance from that happening. Sure, plenty of people don't have problems with an HOA, but I don't want to be in the position for that to be a possibility - same with Bank of America.

    And the Nissan Juke.

I do that with businesses sometimes (as a patron, not an owner). For example, Freddy's, I go there because it was started by a World War 2 Purple Heart veteran. It's still in his family, so I love giving them my money (and the food is good).

There is a guy named Dan Celia (I think I spelled his last name right) He does a radio program on “Biblically responsible investing”. I’m not sure if he does a podcast or not, haven’t checked.

Is he even allowed to do this? I'm glad Tim Cook (or any other CEO of a company I own) doesn't say dumb stuff like this.

No, I don’t think he is allowed. But until it really costs him, he can’t seem to help himself
