i do have one question on atrac... does it use proportioning valves to apply brakes to each wheel or 4 different master cylinders???? i only see one with 4 lines coming out of it on my truck. how does it distribute the braking power?

I think what you need to do is try A-Trac on one of the bobsleigh trails we have here.:D
On Ice all the shortcomings of A-Trac shine like a beacon . Its experience and not theory.

you ever seen cope's truck (TTORA guy)

37s on IFS. The thing is a beast.

While IFS does have its weak points, there are strong points for it.
If you crack the housing, you're kinda SOL. with CV axles, the only thing to break is the actual axle, which can be swapped out in under an hour.

BlueT, aren't you the one singing praises of lockers only (even though you don't have one)? Lockers on an ice track would be 10x more dangerous than atrac! The inability to have the sides turn at different speeds would be a death sentence. On ice, the best is lsd. Ice is however only one example of low traction or off roading situations.

A-Trac is great for dry conditions. If you put it in wet slick rock, deep snow, and deep mud it'll just hold you back. You need wheel speed for those conditions and your truck will be braking the whole time.

I'm not against A-Trac. I think it's a great system for what it is but it doesn't surpass lockers. Lockers provide smooth consistent power whereas A-Trac is jerky. I have front and rear lockers and there isn't a situation where I would have wished I had A-Trac instead.

I don't see anything in your pictures that a stock Tacoma couldn't do. Maybe I don't see all the pictures.

No way man! I love reading this thread....men arguing back and forth on whats better offroad, when in reality they spend more time online than should be humanly possible in one day on a truck site talking about their trucks that they offroad (and have a computer installed next to the speedo with some incredible form of alien wyfii that works while testing their offroad trucks in rugged, remote locations and transmitting reports of atrac and fully locked vehicles through mindwaves transfered directly from this incredible wifi to our screens at home.)

I love checking out this site a few times a day, yes its addicting but geez....was reading a most mileage thread a few days ago and one of the offroad experts that is always chiming in about how awesome his truck 2009 offroad pickup is had less than 10K on it but almost 4,000 posts on TW....I really want in on this alien/brainwave-controlled wifi....but I guess ill have to go snowboarding while using my 4x4 to get there instead:(:pccoffee: Maybe I could install the wifi receptor into my goggles, that would be SWEET:violent:

Btw, just bored waitin 4 buddy to get off work so we can take advantage the snow, no offense to anyone, oh and I think Atrac is AWESOME and I totally accept it!!!!

As in the Luddite known as BlueT.......

Very true, my experience as well on most occasions..

I don't think many of the cons on this thread are much into taking advice.

It uses solenoids, although it is a metering system, not really proportioning, as the booster maintains pressure, and the valve body meters it to the appropriate wheel (brake assembly), as required.
    Single master cylinder though.

Again BlueT has no clue. ATRAC is ice and snow friendly, whereas lockers are downright dangerous on ice. Not to mention the simple fact that VSC will not function with stock or aftermarket lockers.

This has been beaten to death. Each have pros and cons. I was rock crawling the other day, and would have been turning dual lockers on and off multiple times. I only had to shut of ATRAC once all day.
The idea that ATRAC keeping all wheels pushing in snow or deep mud being a disadvantage verses only 1 wheel pushing at both ends, (without ATRAC), is quite simply, ridiculous. But thanks for the theory.....

^ I would love to see what you call "rock crawling". Also, have you ever had dual lockers? I've driven a Tacoma with A-Trac and believe me a dual locked truck will get much further in deep snow than an A-Trac Tacoma.

:notsure: I have two e-lockers Drive them on Ice and snow, when time calls for it use it to pull ATRAC guys up the hill :D
The only time you get lockers hurting you on ice is offcamber and in a turn. So Either I build up speed and turn them off or build up speed and let off the gas to have truck roll through it.
If place is completely crazy I switch to AWD and let limited slipp in central diff help out
Disclaimer: Thats my trail rig (not a 2gen), before anybody runs to their truck to find out how to turn AWD on it.

It must irritate some that they spent so much on lockers that they are envious of newer Taco drivers who got 'locker drivability' with the A-TRAC, as standard equipment?

I don't know why they can't just be happy that the Tacoma is now so equipped and leave it at that. I don't think one system is better than the other... just different, but they both help you reach the same destination.

Hey, tell us what you don't understand about A-TRAC or what you think you know, if you actually care to hear... Let us who actually have it and have used it help... but no need to put down fellow Tacoma drivers, okay?

This whole thread is like the South Park where people are farting into champagne glasses to smell the aroma, only we have prius farts, Nissan leaf farts, and the rest of us who know all farts are special- it's all about how you flex it out.

If I had ATRAC I'd rock it, if I had front locker I'd rock that instead. I would be smart enough to do the thinking. It doesn't take much stupidity to wreck any vehicle no matter what it's got.
