I've never been a fan.
Mainly because a decent one is more expensive than a serviceable spinning reel.

I been useing em for ever, my dad when I was lil handed me an old abu 5500 told if i could get the back lash out I could keep it , I stayed up all night with out cutting it . You can tear em down and service em file Or replace a pawl and bearings never had a prob . I do use a light spinning reel for WHITE PERCH though

I think it takes more skill and practice to use properly.
Whereas a spinner is dead simple.

 

Spinning reel have there times though using 6lb test trying to Pitch/ flip/ skip under docks
