Toyota does not release it's specs.
Any fluid type saying; "compatible", "suitable for", "meets requirements", "exceeds requirements" is not "licensed and approved".

Keep us all updated as to what you find.

I changed my differentials and MT fluids recently at 4K, will wait awhile to do the transfer case. Based on this thread I'm leaning towards the Toyota Liquid Gold fluid (LF). Will keep an eye out for a good deal.

From what I saw compared to the diffs and transmission (MT), don't be in any rush to swap it.

It will be awhile since I only average about 7-8k a year.

I wish that’s what I averaged. I do that every 3 1/2 months just for work, I do about 34k adding vacation and around town in the mix. As for the Ravenol, I’ve seen several people say it works fine. There’s a VOA of it and the LF fluid out there and the LF fluid has a more robust makeup. That’s really why I’m digging around, I don’t like being told that there’s just 1 fluid and we charge what we want for it. I ordered a can from TRDparts and paid 75$ that included shipping $14 and change from Houston, Tx to Ar.

    I was in your boat.
I even went so far as contacting my state attorney's office, FTC and attorneys about filing suit against Toyota for violating Magnuson-Moss. No takers...

Ok, here’s a little up date on the transfer case VF2CM in ‘16 and newer Tacoma’s. I had a brief conversation with a Aisin Warner rep. and here’s what I got. They manufacture all parts of their transfer cases and they are assembled at multiple locations in the U.S. and abroad. They have no association with Borg Warner at all. They are going to forward my contact info to a person that can answer more in-depth questions about the transfer cases. I was told that there’s no guarantee that they will call me back.

No call back to-date and I’m not expecting one. They were pretty clear on not speaking to consumers, I just got lucky that day.

OP, how did the OEM fluid hold up for you during the last winter?

OP is right on track (been there). Use specified OEM drivetrain lubricants and change the lubricants as specified in the manual.

I also only drink OEM Coca Cola beverages. No supermarket branded beverages for me.

For whats it worth i changed my transfer case fluid in the tundras with plain synthetic valvoline 75-90w. I didn't notice any issues, even when starting the truck in -30 quebec winters.
