Hey guys i have been looking at the 09' Tacoma Access cab, 2.7L 4x4, 5speed.... up here in Canada its the first time for the 05+ taco to be offered with the 4cyl/4x4 option.

Now in looking at whats standard and optional on these trucks i see no Limited slip or Locker is available as an option from toyota.

Is this the case with all of them? or just a canada only thing?

Im curious if anyone has added one aftermarket? if it affected warranty... and how your truck functions off road without one.

    Thanks

    Roddy

*Also is a selectable Locker available for the front diff? (like an air locker.. something that wont affect everyday driveability)

I thought I saw it listed on one of the webpages - but apparently not (I stand corrected). Looks like you need to buy one down here! :D or get a V6.....

I read on another post that you can add a Detroit True Trac (LSD) to both front and back. About $450 each (USA). I've emailed a distributor to get parts numbers. I'll repost when I hear anything.

Hey Roddy. Im Canada too and I ordered a 4 cyl Access Cab 4x4 (Its about time they were selling them Canada) It should arrive this week, but anyway, about the limited slip, I don't believe it was ever available on the 2005 and newer 2nd gen Tacoma 4cylinder 4x4's, only the V6 and TRD 4x4's. But now new for the 2009 in all models is the traction control and stability control. So now the 4 banger gets that at least. Limited and locking rear diff would be nice! But I dont plan on doing any crazy off roading in a brand new truck anyway. Ill let you know how the 4cyl 4x4 is when I get it!

ive been driving my awesome 09 4 cylinder 4x4 for the last few days now and its proving to be a great machine! Im pleased with the power so far. But going back to the main topic of this thread: limited slip. All the 09's are equipped with A-trac, and stability control. Im still having trouble wrapping my head around this system. The owners manuel doesnt really explain what it all does very clearly either. I do know in the bit of snow a slush that I have driven in, with all the systems in the default "on" mode, it really cuts the power when the wheels start to spin, in 2WD or 4WD. THis might be good for situations where you don't expect it to get slippery and could save you from spinning out. But when you want to hit the throttle and blast through some snow its really a pain in the ass! It feels like the motor is dieing on you and then you really get stuck! But, it most slippery situations it does get you going when in 2WD.

Push the VSC button. Truck goes into Auto LSD mode. 2WD only.

Um, no, they don't. Go to Toyota.com or Toyota.ca no such option.

I too have a regular cab 4x4 and would like a limited slip or locker. Looks like it was never offered from the factory. The Tru Trac is looking pretty good right now.

For what it's worth, Auto LSD means that the rear diff is open. I just installed a Powertrax No-Slip Auto Locker in the rear diff of my '06 which is a simple spider gear replacement that cannot be performed on a true LSD. For that reason I was glad that the 4Cyl 4X4 isn't a true LSD. I really like the Auto Locker, but it might not be the answer if you.

Also, there are ways to disable VSC and Auto LSD so you don't experience that loss of power.

Any links on what you installed? Did you do it yourself? Thanks.

I installed the Powertax No-Slip automatic locking differential by Richmond Gear. I Bought mine on eBay

There are several threads here discussing the merits of Auto Lockers search Lock Right or Powertrax.

My installation took awhile because of some complications. I didn't take any pictures, but these sites were invaluable to me. I'm happy to answer any other questions you might have.

Mechanically open, but the ABS actuated LSD works better than many mechanical limited slips, in the sense that it doesn't need ANY traction to initiate a limited slip effect, and no dragging effect around corners. Whereas a mechanical LSD has a "breakaway torque", which once exceeded, will not apply any more pressure to the clutch pack, unless the spinning wheel has a least some degree of traction. (One wheel on ice). The ABS actuating on the electronic system will transfer torque, without any other factors.

The "ABS Actuated" or Auto LSD better than nothing, but it does not have the same power you get from a true LSD or Locker. It's designed for loss of traction on the street. Those kind of systems aren't good for trails or anything really ugly.

I do not have personal experience with the Auto LSD but I suspect you are correct in your last post. I have a 67 Mustang with a Detroit Locker and know how well these units work, I can only assume there would be similar benefits with a Power Trax on my Tacoma. Thanks for the links.
