I'm guessing there will be marks from tightening with the socket. Powder coating might fare a little better. If it were me and since the hex bolts are merely cosmetic anyway I would try installing finger tight with clear LockTite once the paint was fully cured. Just a thought.

Fiddled with it a bit and found a pair of mending plates were the key. Just need to adjust and secure with thread locks and done.

I guess that depends on how you intend on using it. It's a pretty versatile tool.
I bought mine to be used primarily as a poor man's winch. I'm also replacing my rear bumper to get rid of that plastic piece of junk that Toyota decided to put on our 3rd gens.
They are available in 3 different lengths. Just as a heads up if you plan on mounting one in a short bed I wouldn't recommend using anything longer than the 48".
My recommendation to answer your question would be to explore the HiLift site and then to explore YouTube as well. You will find numerous applications shown as well as the many accessories available for it. I purchased a number of them to try and cover each senerio, the most useful of which is the Jack Mate.
I know this isn't exactly the answer that you were looking for but like I said it all depends on your intended application. You can even use the damn thing to pull fence posts.
