What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Weird ... th RPM on mine is low and goes smooth.... 2100 for 45-50 mph -... i like 80 -85 mph on highway and it goes 2500 to 2600 RPM... is so smooth engine.... i dont know why but i guess is a good sign that’s been babied?

Want 35s and need 35s are two different things If I got 35s, it would be for the looks, I’d have no real NEED to go 35s. Also, if I did, I’d have likely have to crank my front COs even with having a 1.5' BL.

Looking at the gear ratios side by side is actually interesting. The first one is 4.10 VS 4.88 (4.10 with stock tires, 4.88 w/295/75). Second is 4.10 vs 5.29, third is 4.88 vs 5.29.

4.10 vs 4.88 is basically spot on. And really 5.29's really doesn't seem that bad or that much lower than 4.88, on paper at least

I found that calc to be half accurate.

It was dead on with rpms. And all that.

But not speed.

It was right that my speedo would read 70mph at x rpms. But in reality I was doing 61-62mph. To go 70mph my speedo has to read like 82mph. I have not corrected it with a different gear.

 

So then its not exactly comparing apples to apples when it shows RPMs at given MPH? Because even though its saying on the calc you would be doing 70 @ xxx rpm, in reality you will be going slower?

 

You seem to have a similar approach as myself.... I used to (I DO STILL, I'M SURE) drive my pops and friends nuts planning things out, over think, over plan, over test, over yada yada

I did a similar layout with the tires and ring gear/pinion sizes for my 80 series Cruiser. I was wheeling 35s from the stock 31s and went to 4.88s, which were nice. I then went to 37s, Pitbull Rockers, and I loved my lowered freeway rpms and then I hated the bias ply ride on the freeway. So I ended up with 40" Michelin XMLsyeah I know, makes no sense, they drive smoother on the road than the Rockers though but the gearing could be higher
You can tell what the priority became for me, being able to handle the freeway drive of it as I actually wheeled less and less as life and priorities changed. I just had to get real with myself and my expectations of the rig.

Regardless, if I were in your shoes, I'd likely go the 4.88 route even if I was thinking of 35s just because of my own personal distaste for high freeway cruising RPMs. I like my the RPMs at freeway speed to be stock or as low as possible without killing offroad-ability. And then again, this is me saying this without the experience in the Tacoma though. I'd imagine these engines definitely are affected more than what I'm used to

 

My speedo with the correct diameter tires is off my 10%. I bet the calculator is right.

 

You're right, I do Especially when spending this much money.

 

It was correct as it my speedo read what it said it would. But true speed was slower.

It's pretty well known it's about 5% off. 32" tires make it almost dead on.

But I was aware of that before hand. With gos mine was off too but not that much.

 

Yeah there's a lot of imperfections in the calculation. Tires that aren't exactly the advertised dimensions, speedos that don't read right. I wonder how accurate the tach is too.

 

Upstate NY taco. Started my frame/undercarriage paint/restoration. Took a needle scaler and some wire brushes to the whole underside today. Took about all damn day. Finished the day with degreaser and a hose down. Tomorrow I will degrease once more and then two coats of Eastwood rust encapsulator then followed by two coats of Eastwood extreme chassis paint. A lot of work but in the end will be worth it.

Also doing Eastwood internal frame coating as well, two coats.

 

In theory, the higher the rpms the worse mileage. I did a very sloppy experiment with my truck once. On my weekly commute I would not use 5th gear and compared it to using 5th. The 4th gear (higher rpm) netted slightly better mileage. Way to many factors to consider it conclusive though.

If you go to 4.88s you should get the same mpg you had on stock tires, since the ratios are about the same.

 

So the last couple of days I have had an issue with the "gauge" fuse blowing. I tore into my dash today, but I could not find an obvious problem.
Looking at the factory repair manuals only discouraged me more. Why did Toyota think it was a great idea to add so many other systems to the "gauge" fuse.

 

why not just get the Dakota Digital SGI5-E? It’s fairly inexpensive, easy to install, and is highly adjustable.

I thought about it, and I was concerned about the possibility of them breaking apart and leaving bits of abrasive in places where it shouldn't be.


Also, I have lots of time on my hands. :

 

They won't break apart...

The only thing I'd be concerned about is getting old residue in the cooling jackets. Just cover it all as much as possible and go to town.
