What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I thought about it, and I was concerned about the possibility of them breaking apart and leaving bits of abrasive in places where it shouldn't be.


Also, I have lots of time on my hands. :

 

They won't break apart...

The only thing I'd be concerned about is getting old residue in the cooling jackets. Just cover it all as much as possible and go to town.

What do you think of filling the water jacket with shaving cream, and then vacuuming that out? Saw that mentioned several times while searching on the roloc disks

 

Yep that would do it. The relays aren’t waterproof.

 

Never heard of that or tried it so I don't know. The nice part about the roloc discs is that they are plastic and don't leave an abrasive dust. The material that it clears will leave a dust though, but it'll be minimal. I'm telling you, try the rolocs once on mating surfaces like that and you'll wonder why you ever tried other methods. They don't take off much material at all so you don't really have to worry too much about ruining the "plane". Just make sure you spread out your surface and don't concentrate and spend too much time in one spot.

 

I have a history with that problem. I think I'll clean the big stuff off with a blade, then go back with the roloc and see what I missed.

I honestly don't think that you could really affect the mating surface with a roloc unless you were being malicious about it and spending 10 or 15 minutes in the same spot. Again, they are made of plastic. The metal is much stronger and will just wear down on the plastic roloc (leaving a light plastic dust that should clean up easy).

 

Installed some limit straps today.

 

Did you fix this nut situation prior to install?

 

I'd double nut the top. Or it'll move and not do it's job.

 

A proper pulley tool was $50 and a 2 week shipping wait. Got 'er done for free and right now instead haha

That's a huge, massive, HELL NO! I wouldn't even do that to an engine going to someone I hate. GM and the NHTSA both put out bulletins warning technicians that it's bad practice. Those rubber/plastic finger rolocs leave abrasive bits in engines and it makes its way through the oil to bearing surfaces and wreck them.

Honestly had no idea about the notice. I can understand it on the aluminum heads and aluminum block... but on a cast iron block?? And 15 seconds is a LONG time. If there’s a mechanic out there using an abrasive pad for 15 seconds in one spot, they probably need to be fired.

also, I would never take a new, metal razor blade to an aluminum block or head. It just gouges the aluminum too easy. But GM seems to approve it in that notice. Personally, plastic gasket scraper only on aluminum.

 

Keep an eye on the frame where you welded those. It's pretty thin, like less than 1/8"

I welded my clevis mounts to as big a piece of 1/8" plate as I could fit there, and then welded the whole thing to the frame.
