I'm with @Kanyon71 . Can't give up. Distress it somehow or way?

I also painted the back side of the doors so I'm worried that it will leak around the rivets and get stuck behind the brackets... Would be a mess beyond the one that I already have.

I know it sounds like I'm being super negative.. but I've been searching for all ideas all day and I either need to pour a drink or go to bed haha

Pour a drink and work with us.

Tape off the rivets and then do the work. If you vinyl wrap you don’t need perfect you just need smooth enough.

Then you lay down the stainless wrap then you take the black wrap that’s been cut for the design and lay it over the stainless wrap and pull out the part you want removed. Revealing the stainless wrap up to give the effect you have now.

Does lighting it on fire count as distressed? Haha I'm only kidding

I've thought about trying to use some model paint brushes or q tips or something and take the clear coat off the stainless and maybe etching the stainless steel.
I couldn't find any clear contact paper which would make it so I could match the previous stencil.
I've thought about stripping both doors down and reversing the paint so the doors are stainless and the logo is black.
I've thought about lighting them on fire.

I found a "Hammered" clear coat that gives it a rough surface thinking it would help hide the wrinkled paint and that didn't work either.

Well worst case you buy an $80 stainless graining tool from Harbor Freight or eBay and it will fix the texture issue. Will make it look like new again. I’ve watched people redo Deloreans with them and you could never tell.

Trust me.. I've even pondered remaking the whole door.. the bad part is it's the one with a lip.. which now that I have the right tools is no big deal to bend again. Obviously I'd have to drill all the holes again.. but I'd buy a new hinge too so no drilling rivets.. matching the logo on the other door would be the hardest part of that idea... Plus all the cutting and riveting again

Could always do it in nice wood also. Use you burn technique then lay out your stencil again and then paint part of the wood. That might look pretty badass.

I would like to tell you the post office but we’ve had crap luck there lately. I’ve heard FedEx and UPS will deliver you boxes for free.

No problem. I don’t know if they are still doing it or not. Lately we’ve been just ordering them from like Amazon where possible.

Noooooooo. This thing can't be over. It's too damn close and too damn awesome.

I'm damn near sick to my stomach for you. Hope you can work out a solution. I've been there on projects before. That time is just a sunk cost. Don't look at it as a rework, just look at it as another step in the overall project. You'll get it done.

So... Earlier I mentioned that I was only kidding about lighting it on fire... But in the end.. that's exactly what I did... PAUSE!! Let me explain...

Haha the metal doors are fucked up beyond repair tho I do have an idea for those later.

Since the metal doors were out and I'd already changed the metal shelves to wood.. why not have some wood doors?

The thought of trying to make the wooden doors all perfect etc wasn't exactly a fun idea so I decided to go "rustic" and still have it look awesome! (That's my opinion anyways.. feel free to form your own)

I started with some 2 foot by 4 foot pine.. the idea here is that it's cheap, the size I need and I used pine on the shelves.

    IMG_20200430_152324851.jpg

A little trimming, a groove for the hinges, a light sanding and the doors are ready for the next step.

I picked up some hard board (think paneling without the design on one side) due to its natural ability to not just burst into flames. I spent a few hours in the scroll saw cutting out the lettering etc. There's no way I was going to be able to do the curly q designs so I left this off. I laid out the pending design on the raw doors in preparation for the fire!!

    IMG_20200502_130855529.jpg

You'll see above I needed some tiny circles that I just used a couple of dimes and a nickel that I happened to have in my pocket.

Onto the fun part! A small propane torch was used to burn the wood in the direction of the grain. Since these doors are made of strips of glued together pine strips the pattern is as random as the thoughts in my brain Haha

    IMG_20200502_134554095.jpg

So the hard board I used was just laid in place.. no glue or tape (both highly flammable!!) So the lettering is just lifted off to reveal the pattern. It's not meant to be perfect or anything close.

    IMG_20200502_140622216.jpg

I also burnt the edges and the backside of the doors so when they're open they're all going to match the shelves etc.

This last photo is right after the first of at least 3 coats of polyurethane. This will take a few days to complete both sides etc. Then some handles, some magnetic closers and it'll be ready to move back to the Bourbon Room and reload it !
