In my work truck I’ve got a two piece removable key chain to be able to remove the fob and lock the truck with it running.

I got the same keychain for the Taco and learned today the doors won’t lock with it running via the key in ignition.

is there something I can change to make this work or is it a safety feature I can’t bypass?

They think of everything don't they ? But you can lock the doors from inside when your driving right ?
It could be the fob outside and the key inside is the issue. Seems strange though.

Have you tried hitting the door lock on the passenger door and then closing? Do it with the window down in case it doesn’t unlock for you

Haven’t tried any other ideas yet. Was heading to work and hopped out at a gas station for a drink. Left it running like I do my work truck every day and came out to open the back door and it was locked.... wouldn’t unlock and freaked me out a second until I realized the driver door was unlocked.
So hitting the lock button never worked. I sat in the truck with it running and tried using the fob to lock the doors and it wouldn’t lock.

I can leave my truck running, and use an extra door only key I had made to physically lock it.

I guess I could do that with carrying an extra key.

since I’m wanting this feature it kinda makes sense to go with the 12V system now for remote start since it has the pit stop feature ....

From the factory, the fob won’t work when the ignition is on. That’s 1 of the problems with the remote start that uses the OEM fob where you push lock 3 times to remote start. After you remote start it that way, you have to use the key to unlock it.

I think your only choices are

    1. Carry a 2nd key
    2. Aftermarket alarm and fob
    3. Hidden waterproof momentary switch in the grill.

Thanks for that info. Answered a lot of questions and makes the 12V remote start that much more appealing, as it looks to solve 2-3 issues for me in one shot

Any Mods? One. Maybe two, tops...
I think is worth it for you to look into aftermarket, Viper, Python, Compustar, etc. All these systems offer a "Pit Stop Mode" is a mode that allows the vehicle to continue to run without the key in the vehicle. This way the vehicle remains running WITHOUT the key in the ignition and it allows you to exit the vehicle while it's running and arm the alarm.

    Cheers!

    Rick

If I understand the 12v solutions system they offer the pit stop mode.

Leave one key in the ignition and truck running, hit the automatic locks to lock all the doors, manually flip the unlock lever on your door, get out, use your spare key to manually lock the driver's door with the key hole :)

    That's how I do it

Sat my fat rear end in it.
During the process of adding a cheap aftermarket fob to my taco, I discovered the computer disables the interior power unlock switch after the doors have been locked for a little while. However, the power lock and unlock electrical switches that are activated by turning the key cylinders in the front doors seem to work all the time.

Toyota's software folks really put a lot of effort into programming arbitrary scenarios in which the power door locks won't work.

Lol, you could always try sanding the key down??? I'm joking of course, but here is a fun fact for you that's kinda related and kinda scary. The key I use everyday is now so worn down that I can pull it out of the ignition while the truck is running, yet it still starts the truck. I know it's the key that wore down and not the ignition because I can't do that with my 2 spare keys or valet key. So I guess our ignitions aren't too picky, lol!

Yep I use it just about everyday. Before leaving the truck you press the button for 3 seconds, removed the key and lock the vehicle with the fob while doing the errand. Unlock the truck, stick key back into the on position and drive away normally.

Worn keys are really hard on the lock. You’re forcing the lock to turn when the wafers aren’t perfectly aligned. One of these days, the lock isn’t going to turn with any of your keys.

I never thought about that. You mean the door lock or ignition? I RARELY if ever use the worn key to lock the door.

Check local laws first. In many states it’s a ticket to leave an unmanned vehicle running, even on private property. Exceptions are mail jeeps etc but no private vehicle has an exception.
