    I'm glad you asked.

It's been a long road of trial and error with various dash speakers ever since I first posted this. Short story is I ended up installing the Audiofrog GS25's in the dash. They are great, smooth sounding speakers, but their low frequency capability did't produce the effect I had hoped. Instead of blending better with the door speakers, it did more to call attention to their location in the dash. It sounds as though a drummer is sitting right there on your dash, cracking away at the drums, right in your face!

So for now the Audiofrogs are crossed over above 875Hz@12dB/Oct, but I think they may need to go a bit higher. The high-highs are good enough too that they don't leave me wanting for a dedicated tweeter either. The Audiofrogs are spendy, but I would have saved a lot of time and money if I had just started with these.

Crossing over the factory front door speakers also helped with imaging and overall sound balance. I'm running them below 1100Hz@12dB/oct. The overlap is intentional, figuring it would help with bridging that distance in speaker locations.

It sounds pretty good now, and I might just stop here and be done with it, but I do think that a mid located somehow between the woofer and tweeter would be the ideal setup.

I wish there was a simpler place to put them in. I really don't want to have an ugly aftermarket speaker grill sitting in the middle of the doors. It would be great if someone had a speaker grill that blended in with the stock door.

While not the best idea unless you have a sealed back midrange, you can mount it infront of the 6x9 woofer aiming upwards like a coaxial speaker does. We used to do this with our tweeters in places that we couldnt fit components, but had components already.

Just take some aluminum bar stock, attach it to the door panel right behind the grill, attach the mid to it, then put the door panel on the door.

JBL does this with their 8 inch marine speakers. The mid and tweeter actually twist and come off the 8 inch woofer (they are just mounted to the grill) so you can put them anywhere.

I ended up getting kappa 20mx. They are sealed but are too thick to fit in front. I'm going to try what you did and hope for the best.

You can get some killer deals on infinity speakers.

Yeah, I never really understood the price difference between infinity kappa and JBL stadium. they are the same speakers with different trim half the time. I know JBL uses hard domes and Infinity uses soft, but their subs are the same, but different prices, the woofers for their components are the same, but different prices.

BTW I used these metra adapters to fit my mids in the dash. They center them perfect to fit the factory grill. The passenger side drops right in, the drivers side you need to shave a little bit off one side of the hole in the dash. I industrial hot glued them to the rings because the screws are so close to the center hole that its hard to get screws in there without breaking things.

Has anyone else running mids in the dash location found them to sound "boxy"?

    What's your crossover point?

IIRC, there's about an inch of depth to work with in this location.

I think the 20mx's would fit, but maybe not the ideal spot.

If you want to cut a hole in your door panel, I say go for it! It's a risk I'm willing to take.

Has anyone actually done that yet?
