Yeah the only way it could have come off is if the coder pin was never installed by my "mechanic". Just fortunate I wasn't going 60 down a highway. I was driving down a dirt road 3 hours from home and went to turn and almost ended up in the ditch.

Have you got it figured out? I can try to run out and put a thread gauge on mine real quick.

Yeah, I am curious how it came apart without some noise and irregular steering feedback. And without jacking up the threads...

My guess is improperly installed cotter pin and not torqued to spec.

I stayed at a friend's cabin up here, couldn't get anything figured out. The tie rod I bought wasn't the same size so that didnt work. It did Jack up the threads but they aren't completely fucked. I was driving on sand, I didnt hear anything weird but I was going 60 mph down a highway about a mile before it came out. Turned down a dirt road and I noticed it started pulling to the left, when I tried to make my last turn it came out and I went straight.

You are very lucky. Things could have gone much worse.

I think that I would either get a thread gauge and ID the tie rod end threaded stem, or remove the nut from the other tie rod and match up a new castle nut. Renew both cotter pins if you go this route.
Just make damn sure nobody drives that truck before it is repaired.

I took the other castle nut off, I've narrowed it down and the size should be m16x 1.5. I called 3 different fastenal and none of them have a castle nut that size. I'm going to have to just find a nut that size and use washers to space it up to the codder pin to get me home.

    Perhaps Toyota has the nut.

I found a nut at an ace hardware, got washers and codder pins. Hope this goes smooth.

Thank you Jay, I know better than to throw around the word help, unless I actually need help.

    Good!
Prolly a good idea to pull the tapered tie rod end back out of its bore and inspect the threads, the tapered shaft, and the bore.

I made it home safely, going to have to have a talk with my mechanic tomorrow. Ask him how that nut would have come off if there was a codder pin in there, and codder pins dont just fall out.
