Hello Tacoma World! Brand new to the site, but it looks like it's a good one!! Anyways, so I currently don't have a Tacoma, but plan on getting soon. Right now I have my heart set on the double TRD Off-road package. However, the only thing bugging me, which brings me to my very first question: what's the difference between the 4 speed vs. 5 speed AT? Please don't leave anything out, even the minor details. Thanks ahead of time, and looking forward to be part of TW! -- Jim

I could be mistaken but I think the 4 spd is a 4 cyl and the 5 spd is a 6 cyl

One has 4 speeds, the other has 5.

But seriously, I approve of your avatar.

I'm pretty sure the TRD off road only comes with the 5 speed auto or 6 speed manual. The 4 speed auto is for the four cylinder engine

One more stupid question for the thread please, I just figured it out that there are 4S and 5S AT’s for the Tacomas I read that 5S are for TRD off-road, but how about TRD sport? Just to be sure on what A/T fluid to to buy for a change

the only spot you will find the older 4 speed auto is when paired with the 4 cylinder motor.... 4 cylinder motors never came in any TRD truck (sport or off road)

Thanks a lot. And do you think that Valvoline Maxlife Full Synthetic Multi vehicle ATF is a good option?

The difference is the 4speed has been around for about 30 years, is dirt simple, and actually works. They of course mate it to only the 4 cylinder trucks.

The 5 speed is very complicated and gets confused on the most basic tasks like swapping cogs. 5 speed shift logic "I see you are acelerating from a stop at mid throttle...let's get you into 5th gear now"

5 Speed is just as bullet proof, works well if you know how to use it, and with my latest trasmission tune that adjust shift points / torque converter lockup it behaves even better.

If you really want to be safe, use Toyota WS (World Standard) ATF.

    How to use it?

You put it in D and use the skinny pedal. Maybe I'm doing it wrong...

I just did a full flush on my 2010 DC OR 4x4 with this fluid. It runs and shifts really well now, I was surprised at the difference. Truck has 152k miles on it. The Valvoline Maxlife has better specs than the Toyota WS, although that's not saying WS is a bad product.

Just wondering, if the 4 cyl. is OK with 4 gears, why in the heck would the 6 cyl., with 100 more HP need 5 gears. My 4 cyl. 4 spd. auto needs another gear, between 3 & D. Mine in D, 60mph. is 1800 rpm. & straining to just keep going, 3 is appx. 2500 rpm. @ 60 mph. and pulls great. It seems appx 2100 or 2200 rpm. @ 60 mph. would be perfect. I don't care if thread is 10 yrs old, I'm still not happy.
