    Hey... I agree 100% :hattip:

On the other hand, if someone finds a simple mod that helps dampen the noise on my 3 hours a day commute; then I’m all for that to. I for one will keep following this thread just in case

I agree. Gears whine under certain loading conditions. If they carry my loads, run smooth, don't fail, and talk to me a little I'm pickled tink.

I am betting this noise will be there til Toyota Changes Suppliers for the axles again. This is the trouble with vehicles now days, they are a parts bin of 3rd world country parts. Some of the pics I have seen of newer Tacomas show made in Mexico rear leaf springs. Tip of the ice berg.

I would bet you are right on the axles but they are likely selling so many until a supplier change would disrupt everything. I am still waiting to see if this get fixed but have to buy a truck soon. If this is stilling going on then I will have to move on from the Taco, but mainly because I’m one of those than cannot unhear the howl after hearing it. It drives me crazy and I wish it didn’t. :)

Well, snake oil made no difference for me on my fully stock setup. I believe I'm ready to punt on this issue and look once an a while for a Toyota fix. Some aggressive AT tires next on the list but need to ware the stock down some first before i can justify.

Why don’t you get a sport? Seems a majority of people with sports and SR5s don't have the whining due to the different differential.

What I find weird is just how stubborn Toyota has been in acknowledging and addressing the noise. It's not just some minor annoyance, it's a big time distraction when you're driving.

At this point I'm desperate enough to pay them to fix it. If they had a no-kidding solution for $1500, I'd cut a check on the spot. Literally everything else about the truck is perfect to me.

So.. What’s the census? Without reading through almost 300 pages, is there a fix? I see Toyota won’t acknowledge..

There is no surefire fix at this point. Some have had luck replacing leaf springs with aftermarket ones and/or doing a lift.

Aggressive tires can drown it out. No engineering-level fix though.

I’d have paid them up to $5k to fix the noise on my new truck. Because that’s about what I lost when I traded it.

The problem /is/ the noise. Kind of irrelevant if the differential lasts hundreds of thousands of miles, if it screams at you the whole time. Name one other car that does this, that’s considered “normal”

I've noticed some gear whine in every truck I've owned.

Some whine is fine. I can hear mine with the radio set at 35 though. I don't think that's an acceptable level for a truck with 5100 miles on it, let alone a Toyota...

I’ve owned 30 new vehicles and this is the first one that has ever done this. Also, corporate deemed my rear differential to be faulty. I had ground gears and my pinion angle was off. I had a used Chevy that did this when I was a kid in the late 80s. The diff seized and that was an unpleasant experience to say the least. I have no idea if this one would grenade or not but my second diff was church pew quiet for about 1500 miles but it started whining louder than the first one. If the diff can be quiet for 1500 miles then why not for 150,000? I get that diffs make noise but the issue is when that noise impedes your ability to enjoy your truck.

Everyone seems super unhappy. They should just get rid of their trucks and hop in another vehicle to complain about something else.

Find an example of these differentials grenading. There’d be tons of posts about it if it were the case. Already a track record that shows they work just fine for plenty of miles. Refinement and reliability are 2 different things. Usually the quest for over-refinement leads to unreliability from auto manufacturers. No Toyota truck I’ve driven or owned has been refined. This is just another quirk. Take it or leave it.

I never said it would grenade. One guy posted about it but TBH it was suspect. Mine was defective so “take it or leave it.” I agree refinement and reliability are two different matters. I’ve driven Toyota trucks for decades and this is the first to do this. Also, I did sell my truck. I’ve yet to see over refinement lead to unreliability.

so the member ruined his differential because he drove it improperly and abused it. That doesn’t meet the general experience of all or even most Tacoma owners, which is the point im trying to make. Life’s too short to complain about a whining differential, but for whatever reason people are overly worked up about it.
