Prerunner to 4x4 crossmember

Hi Guys,

So i am doing a 4x4 conversion on my 2012 2.7 dcsb. Ive got alot of the parts already but have a question about the crosmember section. Ive read evrywhere about people modifiying their prerunner crosmembers to accept the 4wd trans. Does anyone know if its possible to just pull a crossmember from a wrecked truck and direct swap it? I havent seen anyone do it so that why im skeptical.

Also is the 2.7 transmount the same bolt pattern as the v6 transmount? A750F vs A340F

Any help would be appreciated.

If you can find a wrecked vehicle one it would work. It is pretty difficult to find just the 4x4 crossmember which is why most people just fab one up with some tube steel. The 4x4 will be 1 inch lower and 1 inch forward. Be sure to field verify the measurements.

No, it wont work. The mounts that are welded to the frame are lower on the 4x4 trucks. Part of modding the crossmember is lowering the center section to compensate for this.

Edit: I believe the brackets on the frame are 1-1/16" higher on the Prerunner than on the 4WD frames. Doesn't make a lot of sense. The cross members are the same but the frame is different. Kinda silly.

 

Except, he isn't right. You'll need to create a custom cross member either way.

 

Hmm so where it attaches to the frame is lower one inch right? Not the portion that is removalble but the bolts. That is on a stock 4x4 not the modified one.

 

Also if that was the case then why would toyota have a removalbe section of the crossmember if the frame sections that were welded were diffrent? I guess to service the trans?

 

Haha yea, that's my question too. They could have easily made the frames the same and the cross members unique. Instead, they make the frames unique and the cross members the same. Doesn't make sense to me, but whatever.

I do know this for a verified fact, btw. I was very confused for like a whole day what I was take measurements off a 4WD truck. I could figure out why all my dimensions were off because the cross members were the same. I'm a little slow, but I eventually noticed the frame brackets were different. I measured those and verified the difference.

 

Did you use a stock driveshaft btw? Im getting one for super cheap so im gonna use it for now. How bad are your vibes lol? Ill go one peice when i have the money.

I have mine original cut shorter. I think it’s 13” shorter. I have vibs at take off but I also haven’t tried fixing my driveline angles. I keep saying a will but it’s been 4 years so I’ll probably never do it.

 

I though aboutcutting mine shoter but im just going to add an extension to my center support area to connect to the carrier since the driveshaft im getting is super cheap and in good condition.

 

It was like $90 to have it shortened if that makes a difference to you.

 

I’m paying $150 so not enough to make a difference haha

Yup. If you mod your cross member correctly, you should end up with an 1” more clearance around the cross member than him. A lot of people get hung up on rock by the cross member so it’s not insignificant.
