    Just found this thread.

Had a first gen, now I’ve got a 3rd gen. Only on 32s with a 2”~ lift on order for some extra ground clearance. Would love to make it out on some stock-ish friendly trails next time with some locals. Only just getting in to the hobby so I’ve got limited recovery gear at the moment, but maybe there is truth to safety in numbers?

Anyway, hello from southern RI. I’ll be watching this thread and hopefully get to meet some new people with similar interests.

I am on stock wheels and tires and height with no armor. Okay the no armor is a bad idea. But otherwise. You’re good.

And you’re in RI as well.

I see plenty of Tacomas in our state, just most look like they’ve only seen a highway. :notsure:

Only places I’ve been are some trails in northern RI, Eastern CT, and a couple unmaintained roads nearby.

yeah the northern ri trails are the one’s that we’re talking about most likely. theres a lot of double tracks but a few decent challenges too.

I am thinking about ordering a t-case skid this week, probably from RCI. I’m also stock suspension, no armor. And chancing it by rolling with no spare currently, since picking up the new wheels. I picked up a new FJ cruiser steel wheel as a spare but don’t have a tire for it yet. Waiting to see what happens with the lady’s Jeep tires before replacing mine. I may end up just running her takeoffs until they’re smoked, and spending the money on a full OME lift instead of new tires until next year or something.

Are you on stock tires? I'd take good tires and skids over a lift any day.

Yeah I need skids and sliders like ASAP. After that it’s what I can afford but likely I’ll only do a hybrid front bumper.

IFS to transfercase skids will get you far. Covers all crossmembers and low hanging parts. @taco-houla it was you who used their rocker panels as rock sliders yesterday right? Get sliders first lol

Running some Chinese Travelstar Ecopath ATs that came on the Fifteen52’s. Slightly more aggressive than stock but I don’t think they’re great quality tires. My last truck had factory skids and I did a 2” spacer/AAL and 33” WildPeak ATs, with plans on adding armor down the road but I ended up selling it and buying the Tacoma.
    15E0499F-AADE-45AB-BF2C-C675B7A9465C.jpg
My logic was where I usually wheel, the extra clearance and grip would save me from needing the armor right away. That increased the truck’s capability, which would allow me to improve as a driver, which would open me up to more challenging terrain, which would then require armor.
My plans are pretty similar for the new truck, but that exposed crossover pipe and solenoid on the back of the t-case make me nervous. I have the factory engine and trans skid, which is better than nothing, but literally just pulled the trigger on that t-case skid (woohoo!). My girlfriend just ordered her 35’s, too, so I think I’ll probably run her 32’s until they’re dead, and lift it in the meantime.

Hahah I arrived at that decision after much calculation. I know shit can always go sideways, but I felt it was a fairly realistic approach.

I’d step up to it knowing that I’m protected and have a spare, sure. Yesterday was my first day out on proper trails in the Tacoma also, so I wanted to go easy and feel it out a bit before pushing anything too challenging

I did it my first time out but was not nearly as cautious as you :p. I guess part of why I’m not super angry about my rocker panel is there have been so many noises so far that I thought were my rockers getting tanked, the fact that it was actually only once and it’s relatively small...not bad.

but what reminded of it was the first time going up the rock crawl I thought I’d bashed my rockers for sure. Not a scratch. Well. Not a dent. On the body. That one I would recommend airing down. I didn’t air down the other day.
