    Hi everyone,

Bored AF cause of corona and work is slow.

Yesterday, May third while wheeling with a buddy, I was near bottoming out in a ditch at about 20-25mph and I smashed into a rock. Couldn't see the rock cause his jeep kicked up a cloud of dust and I should have slowed down but I am an idiot.

Immediately afterward, is starting hearing a clunking noise in the steering wheel. Every bump I would feel it. Almost like something was hitting the steering column. When I stopped I saw that the Mobtown skid had been crumpled hard. It actually pushed up into the driver side cam tab about 1/8th inch. Also bent the radiator support rewards slightly, so my next skid is gonna install weird. Lastly, that horn that sticks out from the bottom also crumpled in. I think its the jack point or something.

Anyway took the truck in. What do you guys think is wrecked?
Update according to Toyota: Intermediate Steering Column. Driver side front cam tab.

5/8/ Update: After replacing the intermediate steering column, they found that a small tiny clip had snapped off the main steering column. The clip itself is not sold alone, and you have to get an entirely new column.

So I guess on the third-gen when you get that 2nd gen rattle, you will be replacing a lot more.

I'd take that off and beat it back flat with a BFH. I doubt you hurt too much, no oil or gear oil leaking so that's a plus. May have some bent stuff, but hopefully nothing that is an issue.

Took mine off last week and beat them flatter. Just completed wire wheel and sprayed primer. They have character.

I cringe to think what your truck would look like if you didn't have a skid plate and hit that same rock...

My buddy and I were actually surprised it didn't. Not sure if having a steel bumper or something messes with that. My head flopped around, and I smacked the back of my head on the b pillar somehow.

Still waiting to hear back from the shop. They are 2 hours passed the promised call back time. Left them a few VMs..

I would've taken that skid off myself first to get an idea of what might be wrong. Hopefully you have a good, honest shop.

I did take the skid off after the trail. I thought it was causing the steering wheel vibe/clunking because it was pressing on something. It also was preventing the swaybar from moving. Nothing changed after I took the plate off. Will get better pics of the skid for all when I get home from work.

Sold hit, that skid saved your wallet! Shouldn't have too much damage man, just straighten everything out once you get that skid off.

IIRC, airbags go off from a combination of G force in a specific direction and penetration of the vehicle towards the passenger compartment. That’s how you can get some and not all airbags deployed, just the ones that will protect you in the direction that you need them. Slamming your skid plate either was not hard enough to trigger them, the force was not in the correct direction to trigger them, or that there was no penetration of the vehicle.

sorry about your truck though. Good news is you’re ok, truck can always be repaired.

Shop called (SM Toyota). They said I just need to replace a few parts in the intermediate steering shaft cause its not doing too hot and they got it covered under warranty. They recommend getting gussets on the cam tabs since the sheet metal got cut into but they won't do it, cause they are a Toyota dealership. They said they were able to straighten out the lower portion of the radiator support.

    Got lucky.

Gonna try to hammer the sucker back into shape. if it doesn't work out, Mobtown is getting an order for another one cause I got full confidence in their skid.

    I am 100% also surprised.
I've always gone to them since they are across the street from where I work and we get a fat discount.

In for the pics. I've put some decent dents in my skids. However not as severe as your's seems.
