Harbor Freight tools thread.

There are hundreds perhaps thousands of posting and groups all discussing how too tune-up these Chinese saws. The basic HF looking saw has been produced for many years under more names that you can imagine that all look like coming from the same factory or what looks to be the same original castings . There have been a few differences here and there through the years depending on who's name appears on them. I spent major time researching and then shimming, grinding, adding washers, using straight edges, bending and twisting to finally get a saw that I could use, meaning actually cutting square and @ 90*.

The last time I used it was to cut the bottom off an old welding tank to make a bell, about 7-8" diameter. I must admit it was almost perfect, just not right out of the box. The thing is there is really nothing out there even at 4X the price that will do what these have the potential to do. Your experience may vary.

 

Have one works fine. A million times better than trying to start my gas trimmer to do one bush.

 

They’re pretty good for the price. I want to get the long gun case for one of my rifles. The “sacrifice” in quality (from my understanding) is that they use plain injection molded plastic as opposed to fiber reinforced polymer like Pelican does. All that means is that you can’t top them around like a pelican but they’re still water tight (o-ring seal) and even have a pressure relief valve. A similar product with a wider model line in different sizes is Eylar (find them on Amazon). I’ve had good luck with both.

 

Thanks. I am getting ready to buy lawn equipment. I am going with an ego mower and weedeater, but just cant justify 150 bucks for a battery powered hedge trimmer for like 4 small bushes. Pretty much made my mind on this one, just seeing if anyone has a compelling arguement against it.

 

You could also consider a battery powered one like Ryobi. I have the Ryobi line of products so I bought the hedge trimmer tool and it works great. The best of both worlds, no worries about fuel, starting, etc., and no extension cords. Slap the battery on and go to it.

It looks like what it is, a cheeper alternative, copied design. Pelican is made in America.

I thought about that, but at 100 bucks I may as well spend 50 more for the ego to match my other crap. At 40 bucks it's hard to justify the other 100. That's how i rationalize it at least.

 

Makes sense. Twice a year they have Ryobi days at Home Depot and then you can sometimes swing a deal that makes it worthwhile. Or you can look for a used charger and batteries on the cheap, but that can be difficult to get good quality stuff sometimes and a PITA to deal with. I had already invested in the Ryobi line and picked up the hedge trimmer during the annual sale for a lower price so it made sense to me. I do like the cordless approach though!

 

I definitely love the thought of cordless, and if there were bushes all around, i would shoot for the ego. The house we are going to has three bushes right in front of the porch. I wouldn't be willing to do a corded weedeater though. Never heard of ryobi days though. May need to look into that for the future!

 

They often offer a deal where you buy two batteries and then can pick up a tool for free. Since the batteries wear out and since my "collection" of tools is always growing, I will buy the batteries for additional spares every now and again and look for a tool I like for free.

 

I have a single hedge. Have had this for years, probably close to 10. No issues.

Have the same one. Got it to tear out some ridiculous bush the previous owner planted right next to the well pump.

 

I was trying to find a b&d like that, but the home depot site said none in stock and not available. I am terrible at checking lowes...

 

I just googled. I’m sure I got mine at Ace or Home Depot. Rarely shop at Lowe’s.

 

Not sure why, but i have a severe distaste for lowes.

same. Only reason why I’ve been there lately is due to less of a line to get in compared to HD and the bonus points for shopping their and using my Amex. Walked around for 10min trying to find an employee that didn’t walk away when I headed their way with a question on where something was. When I did find someone, they said it was on the opposite side of the store of where it actually was.

 

anyone know if HF is still selling their nitril gloves? They had donated their entire stock to health care but me's gettin a little low meself.

 

My local HF sold out of gloves for the very same reason.
