After dealing with hearing my taco tick even at highway speeds for years, I finally got rid of it. Hallelujah!

Turns out dynamat makes a product called hood liner, that’s a thick foam meant for the inside of the hood.

Looking at my truck, it seems that Toyota completely forgot to insulate the upper part of the firewall. So I cut many pieces of hood liner to fit. See attached pic. Needless to say, my truck now sounds like a Lexus. No more drivertrain tap, just pure 1gr-fe vacuum cleaner inspired goodness when I put the pedal to the metal.

Some passenger cars come with insulation on the firewall and hood.

I thought the official tick fix was to put washers on the VSV

Yeah he didn’t get rid of the tick, he hid it from his ears.

Yeah I did that and it didn’t make a difference for me, mine was most noticeable at highway speeds.

Haha exactly. The hood liner comes with an adhesive on it, just had to clean the dust off the firewall.

I must be lucky. My 2015 4.0L has 55K on it and no "tick".

you have a link you got the hoodliner from? Is it made for soundproofing or heat insulation?

Wow, how many separate pieces did you have to cut to get it to fit in all those difficult areas?

That ticking is either your emissions equipment or your valves. Looking into why it’s so loud is probably better than using a bandaid fix. If you’re aware of why it’s ticking so loud and, it cannot be fixed, then I understand why you’re trying to muffle the noise.

My 09 has ticked since the day I bought it (with 48k miles on it). I tried to washer trick and it might have helped minimally but I’m up to 123k miles now and the sound hasn’t really changed. I was told it’s a normal taco sound so I wrote it off as such.

But, with that said, any time I’m driving next to a concrete median or wall, I can definitely hear it. It doesn’t bother me but the idea of using this dynamat product is intriguing. I may order some just to see how quiet I can get the engine at highway speeds.
